Many maize (Zea mays L.) breeding programs select genotypes considering just grain yield. However, this strategy may not be efficient due to undesirable associations between grain yield and other traits. The breeder's challenge is to combine good characteristics in one genotype. The aim of this study was to propose a new approach to select maize progenies considering multiple traits. One hundred forty‐one half‐sib progenies were evaluated for 14 agronomic traits in a 12 by 12 triple lattice design in two environments. Four progeny selection strategies were performed to increase yield. Strategy 1, considering just yield; Strategy 2, considering all traits in a selection index; Strategy 3, considering only traits that have effect in yield, based on path analysis; and Strategy 4, similar to Strategy 3, but disregarding any trait showing undesirable correlation with other traits. Strategies 2, 3, and 4 considered Smith and Hazel index. The progenies selected by Strategy 4 showed more balanced predicted gains considering all traits. Its predicted gain in all traits related to yield was higher than the of Strategies 2 and 3, and it led to smaller gains in height and flowering time, which breeders want to decrease its means. Strategy 1 showed the best gains in yield, as expected, but obtained undesirable phenotypes for the other traits. The use of path analysis to delineate the Smith and Hazel index is a very appealing approach for selecting maize progenies and the Strategy 4 was the most efficient at accomplishing balanced gains for multiple traits.

In view of the need to increase genetic variability to obtain materials with a significant capacity to drought tolerance, this study conducted a cycle of a reciprocal recurrent selection of full-sib families of maize. To this end, 64 full-sib families of maize were evaluated in two environments according to their morpho-agronomic data in a randomized block design with two replicates. It were analyzed of Male flowering (MF); Female flowering (FF); Flowering interval (IF); days for flowering (DF); Plant height (PH); Ear height (EH); number of plants at the Stand (NPS); Number of broken plant (NBrP); Number of bedded plants (NBeP); Strawing (St); Ear length (EL); Ear diameter (ED); Ear number (EN); Prolificacy (Pr); Number of diseased ears (NDE); Number of ears attacked by pests (NEP); Ear weight (EW); Yield (YIE) and Total Chlorophyll Index (TCI). The analysis of variance was performed by the F test at 5% significance level, and also the evaluation of genetic parameters. Regarding morpho-agronomic data, the analysis of variance and the analysis of genetic parameters showed that there was no interaction genotype x environment with regard to the genetic variability among the families under study. Lastly, the final selection of the superior genotypes was made on the basis of the ranking of the 40 most productive families, from which, combined with the molecular data, the 30 most productive, most drought-tolerant, and most genetically diverse ones were selected to compose the next cycle of recurrent maize selection aiming water-stress tolerance.

A demanda por alimentos orgânicos vem crescendo e o milho assume grande importância como fonte energética e proteica. Objetivou-se avaliar o desempenho de diferentes cultivares de milho no sistema orgânico. Doze cultivares de milho foram avaliadas em: Ipeúna, safra 2017/18 e safrinha 2018; e Araras, safra 2017/18, SP. Foi utilizado o delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados com 3 repetições, parcelas de 4 linhas de cinco metros e espaçamento de 70 cm. Avaliaram-se: danos causados pela lagarta do cartucho (DLC), florescimento masculino (FM) e feminino (FF), número de ramificações do pendão (NRP), comprimento do pendão (CP), altura da planta (AP) e da espiga (AE), "stay green" (SG), produtividade (PROD) e teores de proteína bruta (PB) e energia bruta (EB). As análises de variância individuais, conjuntas e o teste de Scott e Knott revelaram variabilidade para DLC, FM, FF, NRP, CP, AP, AE, SG e PROD. As correlações mostram indícios de que plantas mais tolerantes aos ataques da Spodoptera frugiperda possuem maiores teores de PB e EB no grão. Destacaram-se AGRI 340, JM 4M50, IAC 3330, IAC 8077, IAC 8046 e IAC 8390, que poderão ser indicadas e utilizadas no melhoramento de milho para sistema orgânico.
