Ten elite maize (Zea mays L.) lines were crossed in a complete diallel scheme and the single-cross hybrids obtained were assessed at four experimental stations of the Agronomic Institute of Campinas, in São Paulo State, Brazil. The experiments were set up in a randomized complete block design with three replications, including four commercial checks. The experimental plots consisted of two 5-m rows spaced at 0.9 m, with a total of 50 plants. The traits assessed included: days to mid-tassel pollen shed (DPS), plant height (PH), ear height (EH), grain yield, corrected for a 50-plant stand and 14% moisture (GY corr.), and resistance to Phaeosphaeria maydis and Puccinia polysora. General and specific combining ability effects (GCA and SCA) were determined. There was extensive genetic variability among hybrids with the best hybrids (HS 04 x 10 and HS 10 x 11) not differing from the commercial checks. The lines with the greatest potential for hybrid synthesis included: L 10, L 11 and L 13, because they had higher GCA for yield, moderate resistance to P. maydis and reduced EH. The greatest contribution to reduction of the Phaeosphaeria stain was obtained with L 5. The magnitude of the GCA relative to the total variation indicated that additive effects predominated for resistance to P. maydis and P. polysora. Significant SCA (P < 0.01) was also found, indicating dominance effects as well.
This study evaluated the effect of damage caused by S. frugiperda on yield of maize hybrids and their conventional and isogenic transgenic versions, with different Bt toxins, in field conditions. Experiments were conducted in the municipalities of Campinas and Mococa, São Paulo State, Brazil, in the growing seasons of 2010/2011 and 2011/2012, in a randomized complete block design, with 12 treatments and four replications. The variables evaluated were: grain productivity, one hundred grain weight and grain yield. For the assessment of damage caused by S. frugiperda was verified the intensity of leaf injuries through visual scale of notes, with variation of 0 and 9, from 15 to 60 days after sowing. Lower scores of damage caused by S. frugiperda were found in transgenic hybrids. Most conventional hybrids do not differ in grain productivity from at least one of isogenic transgenic versions. The same maize hybrid with different Bt toxins may have different productive behavior in field conditions. Different Bt toxins respond differently to damage caused by S. frugiperda.
ABSTRACT COMBINING ABILITY, GENETIC DIVERGENCE AMONG MAIZE LINES AND CORRELATION WITH HETEROSISThe objectives of this research were to evaluate single cross hybrids of maize (Zea mays L.) obtained from partial diallel crosses among contrasting inbred lines, to estimate the combining ability of the lines and to verify whether the genetic diversity among those lines assessed by moleculars markers is correlated with single cross hybrid heterosis Thirty-six single-crosses resulting from partial diallel and the 12 parental lines were evaluated in Campinas, State of São Paulo, in randomized block design, with tree replicates and two commercial checks. The following traits were evaluated: plant and ear height, ear weight and grain weight. Individual variance analysis of hybrids were performed, and the averages were compared by Tukey test (P<0.05). General combining ability of the lines was obtained according to Geraldi e Miranda Filho. Correlations among matrices were estimated through Mantel statistics,
RESUMO ABSTRACT PERFORMANCE OF MAIZE TOP CROSS HYBRIDS FROM S 3 LINES IN THREE ENVIRONMENTS IN SÃO PAULO STATEThe present work aimed to evaluate the performance end high parent heterosis of 27 hybrids of partially endogamic lines (S 3 ) obtained from commercial hybrids, using top cross squemes with testers (IA 33). Also, the general combining ability (GCA) of the lines was evaluated. The 27 top cross hybrids, two commercial checks and the tester were evaluated by complete block design with three replications, in two years (2005/2006 e 2006/2007), and three locations (Campinas, Mococa and Palmital) of São Paulo State. The evaluated traits were: plant height (AP), ear height (AE), percentage of broken and loged plant (AC+Q), ear yield (PE) and grain yield corrected of 14% moisture (PG). Top cross hybrids of high yield performance that outperformed or did not differ from the commercial check were observed. Therefore top cross hybrids with high yield performance and with advantage of small production cost were identified. Also line S 3 with high value of GCA were observed.
Correlation between the heterosis of maize hybrids and genetic divergence among linesAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate grain yield of maize single cross hybrids obtained from diallel crosses among contrasting lines, to estimate the combining ability of the lines, and finally to confirm if the genetic diversity among those lines assessed by molecular markers is correlated with single cross hybrids heterosis. The 36 single cross hybrids resulting from partial diallel and 12 parental lines were evaluated in Campinas in randomized block design, with three replicates and two control lines checks. General combining ability of the lines was estimated according to Griffing model 4. Correlations among matrices were estimated through Mantel statistics, considering heterosis, yield and specific combining ability with genetic divergence assessed by AFLP and SSR. The hybrids PM518 x L111 exhibited an outstanding yield and the lines PM518, IP4035 and L111 showed positive general combining ability. The estimate heterosis ranged from 927 to 6,698 kg ha -1. A positive and significant correlation was observed in parental lines between heterosis and genetic diversity assessed by AFLP and SSR. The genetic divergence, however, was not enough to determine the specific combining ability and the hybrids yield.

ABSTRACT INBRED LINE POTENTIALS FOR THE SYNTHESIS OF NEW POPCORN HYBRIDSEighty-two and twenty-seven maize inbred lines (derived from popcorn cultivars Guarani and IAC-64, respectvely) have been evaluated as to their potentials for hybrid synthesis , using as a tester a single hybrid, arisen from cultivar South American Mushroom (SAM). Top crosses were alocated to field trials I, II and III, carried out during 1996/97 growing season, in seven different sites. The following agronomic traits have been scored: plant height (PH), ear height (EH), number of ears per plant (NE), frequency of rotten ears (RE), grain yield (GY) and seed popping ability (PA). Top crosses with IAC-64 inbred lines have shown significant PH and EH reductions and PA increase, while those involving Guarani inbred lines presented trends of increasing GY and NE, and decreasing RE. Inbreeding depression and heterosis of hybrids in F 2 populations of maize in the Sao Paulo State, Brazil Abstract Heterosis and inbreeding depression are complementary phenomena, both important to the establishment of breeding strategies, such as conventional hybrids and population breeding. This study aimed to evaluate the agronomic traits of hybrids in F 2 populations, estimate of heterosis in relation to the average of the parents and determine the inbreeding depression in F 2 parents populations. Ten hybrids of F 2 populations, five F 2 parents populations and the respective commercial hybrids (HC) were evaluated for male flowering, plant height, ear height and grain mass. Plants were evaluated in Mococa and Palmital counties at the Sao Paulo State and the experiment was arranged in a completely randomized block design. The estimated inbreeding depression from F 1 to next F 2 generation ranged from 18.0% in HC12 to 48.1% in HC10 for grain mass. The heterosis in relation to the parents' mean was 37.2%, represented by high yield in F 2 hybrids. Based on these results, it was possible to highlight two hybrids of F 2 populations with high yield potential, high average heterosis and F 2 populations with potential for extraction of inbred lines.
