Capture sequence and relative abundance of bats during surveys

Abstract: ABSTRACT. It is expected that rare species will be gradually added to biodiversity surveys over time and that complete inventories will include rare species. The objective in the present work is to test whether the capture sequence of species during a bat survey is related to species abundance. Species with capture rates lower than 0.01x10 -3 captures/hour-net were considered rare. At Ilha da Gipóia, rare species accounted for 22.22% of the total and, at Rio das Pedras Reserve, they represented 30.00%. The exi… Show more

“…On Ilha Grande, in the municipality of Angra dos Reis, there is a list with over 3,000 captures and 36 bat species captured during seven years of sampling work . In Rio das Pedras Reserve, Mangaratiba municipality, 26 bat species were listed after 1,287 captures (Esbérard and Bergallo, 2008a;Esbérard, 2009). On Ilha da Gipóia, Angra dos Reis municipality, 27 species were recorded after 1,776 captures (Esbérard, 2009).…”

“…In surveys with continuous sampling effort, Esbérard (2006Esbérard ( , 2009) detected a declining trend on capture rates during consecutive sampling nights, and a negative trend on capture rates for common species with continuous effort, suggesting that bats might learn the position of the mist-nets and avoid them. Our results suggest that bats did not learn the position of the mist-nets, as the capture rates only slightly change over the three nights sampled each month.…”

“…For each month and for each (females, males, juveniles, gravid females and so on) we used capture rate, expressed as total of captures divided by the total of h*m 2 of nets (Straube and Bianconi, 2002), but to increase the visualization and use only three decimal places, we multiplied the values by 10 3 (Esbérard, 2009). To estimate the beginning of the reproductive season in each year, we considered only the years that had a number of captures equal or larger than ten pregnant females.…”
