Bat diversity of Ilha da Marambaia, Southern Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil (Chiroptera, Mammalia)

Abstract: Few sites have been well sampled for bats, and samplings in islands are even scarcer. Therefore, the objectives of the present study were: (1) to list the bat species of Ilha da Marambaia; (2) to compare richness, abundance and biomass of bat guilds found there; (3) to analyse abundance patterns of bat species; and (4) to compare richness, abundance and composition of the bat fauna among different kinds of environment. To capture bats we used mist nets set in five different environments, totalising 3559.2 net-… Show more

“…Yet, several studies indicate higher capture rates of insectivorous bats, especially molossids and vespertilionids, on water body margins (Myers and Wetzel 1983;Esbérard 2003;Silva 2007;Lourenço et al 2010;Costa et al 2012). Thus, we attribute our successful capture rates of M. lavali (and N. leporinus) to the placing of mist nets in in a V-shape, on the edge of water bodies where these bats forage.…”

“…This species has been recorded for the Atlantic Forest biome in the northeast (Faria 2006), southeast (Lourenço et al 2010, Souza et al 2015 and recently in the south region of Brazil, in Paraná state, with this being the austral limit known for this species (Carvalho et al 2014). Studies about the fauna of bats for the state of Santa Catarina had not listed V. caraccioli (Cherem et al 2004, Passos et al 2010) and this study also represents the first record of this species in the state of Santa Catarina.…”

“…In the present study, the insectivorous guild was abundant in the diurnal roosts, although no Molossus molossus were captured in the mist nets. The vespertilionid Myotis lavali was captured mainly in the nets set at the margins of small bodies of water, an ideal location for the capture of insectivorous bats (Lourenço et al 2010;Costa et al 2012;Novaes et al 2015).…”
