Capture-related Hypoglycemia and Recovery in Free-ranging Black Rhinoceroses (Diceros bicornis bicornis)

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Hypoglycemia (glucose ,65 mg/dl) was detected in 21 of 28 immobilized freeranging black rhinoceroses (Diceros bicornis). At repeat sampling 25 min later, only 6 of 28 were hypoglycemic (P,0.05). Lactate was significantly higher (P,0.0001) early in immobilization. Hypoglycemia and elevated lactate may increase risk of anesthetic complications and postrecovery problems.Exertional trauma, hyperthermia, myopathy, and metabolic changes (lactic acidosis, hypoglycemia, and dehydration) are potential complica… Show more

“…The low glucose level found in the male pig after clinical deterioration was suspected to be the result of severe disease, possible multiorgan failure and decreased cortisol levels secondary to ongoing stress 26. However, hypoglycaemia in relation to capture processes has been described in non‐domestic animals and potentially increases morbidity and mortality of the immobilisation event 27. Glucose levels of the two pigs in this report in the initial blood samples obtained were normal; however, measurements were not repeated, and therefore, it remains unclear when the hypoglycaemia developed.…”
