Capparis kbangensis (Capparaceae), a new species from central Vietnam

Abstract: Capparis kbangensis Sy & D.V. Hai, a new species from Kbang District, Gia Lai Province, Vietnam, is described and illustrated. The new species is morphologically similar to Capparis versicolor but differs by several characters such as emarginate leaf apex, hairy margin of sepals, smaller fruits, and fewer seeds per fruit. Its ecology and conservation status are provided along with a taxonomic key to the closely allied species.

“…Furthermore, during the past decade various new species were described and a few others were first recorded from Vietnam. Five new species, C. bachii, C. daknongensis , C. dongvanensis , C. gialaiensis and C. kbangensis , were described by Sy et al [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ] from different areas of the country, while three taxa, C. fengii , C. pubifolia and C. sikkimensis subsp. masakai , were first recorded [ 33 , 35 , 36 ].…”

“…The taxonomic treatment here adopted, as well as the main diagnostic characters within the genus, follow Jacobs [ 3 ]. The data on the distribution of the taxa are based on herbarium collections and on bibliographic sources [ 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 19 , 20 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 , 33 , 35 , 36 ]. The species recognized in the study area are arranged in alphabetical order in the checklist.…”

“…This genus is especially close to Saprosma Blume, but differs from it by having inflorescences borne on peduncles directly from main stems, these with no more than one reduced basal node (vs inflorescence borne on regular paired axillary short shoots, each short shoot with several stipulate nodes). It is also close to Paralasianthus H. (Sy et al 2015(Sy et al , 2020Do et al 2018Do et al , 2021Bui et al 2019Bui et al , 2020 Nguyen et al 2019). We expect that further floristic surveys in Kon Chu Rang Nature Reserve should be conducted and more new species will be added to the flora of Vietnam.…”

“…The genus Capparis L. comprises about 150 species (POWO 2022), widespread in the tropical and subtropical regions of the Old World and occurring in a wide range of habitats from sea level to c. 3600 m (Souvannakhoummane et al 2020). Jacobs (1965) recorded in the Indo-Pacific area 82 species, but recently several new taxa were described from various areas of southern Asia and New Caledonia (Viswanathan 2000;Srisanga and Chayamarit 2004;Sy et al 2013Sy et al , 2015Sy et al , 2018Sy et al , 2020Fici 2012Fici , 2016aFici , 2016bFici , 2017aFici , 2017bFici , 2021Murugan et al 2020;Julius 2022). With regard to Lao PDR, floristic surveys carried out during the last years in poorly investigated areas allowed the description of a few new species (Souvannakhoummane et al 2018(Souvannakhoummane et al , 2020Fici et al 2018, while two species were recorded for the first time from the country (Fici 2016a;Tagane et al 2020).…”
