Capacity enhancement of aqueous borohydride fuels for hydrogen storage in liquids

Abstract: In this work we demonstrate enhanced hydrogen storage capacities through increased solubility of sodium borate product species in aqueous media achieved by adjusting the sodium (NaOH) to boron (B(OH) 3) ratio, i.e., M/B, to obtain a distribution of polyborate anions. For a 1:1 mole ratio of NaOH to B(OH) 3 , M/B = 1, the ratio of the hydrolysis product formed from NaBH 4 hydrolysis, the sole borate species formed and observed by 11 B NMR is sodium metaborate, NaB(OH) 4. When the ratio is 1:3 NaOH to B(OH) 3 , … Show more

“…Another material with greater stability is NaB 3 H 8 , synthesized and investigated by Shore [238]. Schubert [239] noted that the NaB 3 H 8 provided the added advantage of greater solubility of both the starting material and the products, in part due to the formation of a mixture of products upon H 2 release.…”

“…Very little experimental information about the physical properties (especially thermodynamic properties, e.g. stability) is available in the literature for the complex hydrides [239,244]. Only a few compounds benefiting from their large production are used in chemical processes and have been investigated in more detail (e.g.…”
