-Self-excitation for synchronous generator is described in the paper. The system is based on a buck converter input filter capacitor discharge through excitation winding of the generator. The buck converter is connected to the stator outputs through an uncontrollable diode rectifier, but excitation winding is used as a load. Input filter capacitor of the converter provides initial current pulse which magnetizes excitation system and produces the generator voltage increase, for this reason the capacitor is charged before self-excitation process starts.Results of the computer simulation and physical experiment are obtained and presented. These results show that the proposed self-excitation converter in conjunction with an input capacitor pre-charged from a low-power electronic generator actually magnetizes the generator excitation system therefore generator voltage and accordingly excitation current increases. Stabilization of generator output voltage occurs with a voltage surge, though its peak value slightly exceeds the reference one.The future investigation of the proposed self-excitation system may include definition of mathematical equations which describe transients in the generator's self-excitation mode and development of control methods for purpose of self-excitation process control without voltage peaks. The computer model also should be improved.

In this paper the factors influencing the selfexcitation process in the synchronous generator and a method of this process improvement are described. In the case of high stator windings inductance commutation process in the rectifier at the generator output interfere with successful self-excitation, which is confirmed by analytical calculations and practical experiment. Use of the excitation current pulse regulator with the input capacitor allows not only to control current according to the generator rotation speed and load, but also to provide initial magnetization of the excitation winding, that in turn compensates influence of the commutation processes. The generator selfexcitation at low speed is provided selecting the initial voltage level of the regulator input capacitor.

Experimental study: generator loading at a 1 KVA, 400 Volt, 50 Hz, 1500 rpm power plant shows that the frequency and voltage are down slowly due to the inability of the spin of the water turbine to compensate the nominal rotation of the generator. Impulsive and rapid load changes can also cause the voltage drop in the generator. Voltage instability will affect the quality of apparent power generator generated. In this study, the generator is driven by a water turbine at 1500 rpm and loaded 1 kW. The excitation system generator is a self-excitation system. Voltage excitation field 18 Volt generator and excitation current 350 mA. The result of simulation of generator loading at 414.3-1183.2 VA, generator voltage decreases slowly from 399-380 Volt. Generic power generated by generator shows a linear increase of 138.1-394.4 VA. If a load of the generator is raised up to 1183.3 VA, the generator voltage falls to 380 Volts. The real power produced below the nominal is 394.4 VA and the load current is 0.6 Ampere.
