Canopy temperature depression for droughtand heat stress tolerance in wheat breeding

Abstract: An infrared thermometer was first used to assess drought and heat tolerance in plant breeding more than 40 years ago. Soon afterward, this method became widely used throughout the world. However, Russia has not yet applied the described method for evaluating stress tolerance. This paper presents an overview of using infrared thermometry in plant breeding. Taking wheat as an example, it shows major advantages and disadvantages of canopy temperature depression (CTD) values measured by the infrared thermometer. T… Show more

“…While data from HMI and thermal imaging can be used to generate a number of health indices, we carefully chose NDVI and CTD indices after explicit considerations. Our choices are driven by 1) NDVI remains one of the most important and popular indices used in the domain [35] and the ground truth dataset provided by the municipality contains remote NDVI for a fair scientific comparison 2) CTD is one of the relatively simpler metrics for assessing properties of a tree such as water consumption and its resilience to drought and heat stress events [46], and it uses different wavelengths than NDVI (thermal imaging sensors instead of HMI sensors). In turn, generating two complementary health parameters for urban trees.…”

“…The plant canopy is usually cooler than the air, and its temperature depends on the degree of stomata opening and the evaporative cooling of the plant, i.e., water availability [66,67]. The CTD, which is the difference between the canopy and air temperatures, is a known indicator of plants' water status and response to drought and heat in various crops, including peanuts [64,68].…”

“…These reference panels serve to increase the accuracy of Canopy Temperature Depression (CTD) calculated from thermal data collected by the drone. CTD is a metric that can be used by breeders and other researchers to indicate a particular genotype's tendency to use soil moisture to cool the plant canopy under drought conditions 4 . The panels are constructed from 1060 aluminum alloy.…”
