Cannabidiol arrests onset of autoimmune diabetes in NOD mice

Abstract: We have previously reported that cannabidiol (CBD) lowers the incidence of diabetes in young non-obese diabetes-prone (NOD) female mice. In the present study we show that administration of CBD to 11-14 week old female NOD mice, which are either in a latent diabetes stage or with initial symptoms of diabetes, ameliorates the manifestations of the disease. Diabetes was diagnosed in only 32% of the mice in the CBD-treated group, compared to 86% and 100% in the emulsifier-treated and untreated groups, respectively… Show more

“…The observed attenuation of T cell-mediated responses is in line with previous reports showing the immunosuppressive effect of CBD in two T cell-related murine models, including type-1 diabetes and collagen-induced arthritis [10,12,16] . In these models, a common feature of CBD-mediated effect is a marked attenuation of IFN-γ production and the subsequent immune/ inflammatory responses elicited by this cytokine.…”

“…Previous reports showed that CBD affected both humoral and cell-mediated immune responses in a number of experimental models [6,10,12,16,24] . In these reports, CBD demonstrated a broad spectrum of effects on the serum production of inflammatory cytokines and the expression of cytokines by lymphocytes activated by the T cell mitogen ConA.…”

“…In addition, the level of the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-12 produced by splenocytes was significantly reduced, whereas the level of the anti-inflammatory IL-10 was significantly elevated after CBD treatment. 98 This data have suggested that CBD can possibly be used as a therapeutic agent for the treatment of type 1 diabetes. CBD has also been proven useful for possible complications of diabetes.…”

“…Jellemzőjük, hogy a 18. hét végére 90-100%-ukban glycosuria alakul ki [22]. A vizsgálat során a 24. hét végén a CBD-vel kezelt egereknek csak 32%-ában alakult ki glycosuria [23]. Ehhez hozzájárul, hogy a CBD a szövődményeket is tompítja, például a diabeteses retinopathia kialakulását is mérsékelte adott kísérleti körülmények között [24].…”
