Canine rangeliosis: the need for differential diagnosis

Abstract: Rangeliosis is a hemoparasitosis that affects dogs in Brazil. The disease has similar clinical and pathological characteristics to other hemo-protozoan infections. So, this paper has aimed to report a clinical case of infection by Rangelia vitalii in one dog, focusing on the need for the differential diagnosis to other infectious diseases. “…A similar result has been observed in dogs experimentally infected with Rangelia vitalii , which is a protozoan parasite that causes canine piroplasmosis in Brazil (Da Silva et al 2013; Paim et al 2013). Increase of serum TNF-α concentration has also been observed in human and bovine babesiosis (Shaio and Lin 1998; Kontaş and Salmanoğlu 2006).…”

Interestingly, B. gibsoni has been reported exclusively in southern Brazil [87,104], which also suggests that R. sanguineus s.l.…”
