Canine leishmaniasis due toLeishmania infantumMON-1 in northern Morocco

Abstract: S u m m ary :A seroprevalence study of canine leishmaniasis was carried out in five provinces in northern Morocco: Taounate, Al Hoceima, Zouagha Moulay Yacoub, Chefchaouen and Ouezzane. 55 localities have been concerned and a total of 1,013 dogs were screened, which represents almost 100% of the canine census. Of the screened dogs: 8 7 showed antibody titer ≥ 100 when tested by IFAT (seroprevalence of 8 .6 %) and were distributed in 83 asymptomatics (without clinical symptoms) and four symptomatics (with one o… Show more

“…Epidemiological surveys in the pre-Saharan area show that P. longicuspis is suspected in the transmission of the VL in the south of Morocco (Dereure et al 1986). This finding agrees with the results from another survey of L. infantum reservoirs that showed increased seroprevalence at intermediate altitudes between 500 and 1,000 m (Nejjar et al 1998). Generally, the role of Larroussius species in the transmission of L. infantum remains to be specified.…”

“…L. infantum is also responsible for widespread visceral leishmaniasis in the North-Eastern slope of the Rif Mountains, the most active area of this form of the disease. The dog is the main domestic reservoir of the species [7]. Among about 20 sand fly species that play a significant role in the transmission of Leishmania parasites in the Mediterranean basin, members of the subgenus Larroussius represent the most important vectors of L. infantum [8-10].…”

“…In 2008, the Moroccan Ministry of Health reported 9 VL cases and 64 CL cases spread over several sites belonging to Sefrou province, the causative agents of CL and VL were identified as L. tropica [12] and L. infantum , respectively [7,13,14]. Despite the large number of foci of CL and VL in this province, the vectors have never been identified with certainty.…”

“…Three different forms of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) occur in distinct geographical areas of Morocco: (i) zoono-tic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) is epidemic in southern Morocco and is known to be caused by Leishmania major (Zymodeme MON25) [4]; (ii) a chronic form of cutaneous leishmaniasis is encountered in the center and North of Morocco and is due to Leishmania tropica [5,6], and (iii) a sporadic form occurs in northern Morocco, which is caused by Leishmania infantum, the causative agent of human and canine visceral leishmaniasis in the same area [7,8].…”
