Candida arthritis in an immunocompetent patient without predisposing factors

Abstract: Candida arthritis is infrequent in patients who are not intravenous drug users. We describe a patient who was not an intravenous drug user and without other predisposing factors who developed knee arthritis caused by Candida albicans. We believe that this is the first report of such a case.

“…It occurs in immune‐compromised patients and maybe in patients with no predisposing factors. It even may occur in healthy people who do not have any signs of Candida infection (Romero, Vega, Vallinas, & Alberdi, 1998). Anti‐arthritic drugs often have severe side effects and cause fungal resistance.…”

“…In einem Fallbericht von Calvo et al [156] wird über eine candidaassoziierte septische Arthritis bei einem immunkompetenten Patienten ohne prädispo-nierende Risikofaktoren berichtet. Die Durchführung einer vorangehenden Gelenkpunktion wurde bei diesem Patienten nicht beschrieben, so dass pathogenetisch eine hämatogene Streuung bei passagerer Fungämie angenommen werden muss [157].…”

“…In fact, among the various Candida species, C. albicans is the most commonly associated with fungal arthritis. In addition, the fungus causes arthritis in people without other predisposing factors (Calvo Romero et al, 1998) and even in healthy people whose initial operative cultures had no signs of Candida infection (Arnold et al, 1981). For the treatment of fungal arthritis, anti-arthritic agents that enable the removal of macrophages are applied to patients, which is very similar to treating rheumatoid arthritis.…”
