Cancer mortality predictions for 2021 in Latin America

Abstract: Cancer mortality rates in major Latin American countries are relatively low, except in Cuba. Still, they are predicted to decline moderately until 2017. Stomach and cervix rates remain high, though declining in all countries except cervix in Cuba. Estimated avoided cancer deaths in 1990-2017 are over 420,000 in 5 of the countries, but not in Brazil and Cuba, despite high rates in the latter.

“…In Russian, Ukrainian, Japanese, and Korean, men colorectal cancer mortality rates have surpassed those of stomach cancer only recently, and in Israeli, Hong Kong, and Australian women colorectal cancer ranks third after lung and breast cancer. The predicted mortality rates for this cancer in Russia, Ukraine, Hong Kong, and Japan are higher than or comparable with those in the EU (Dalmartello et al , 2022), whereas those in Israel, Korea, and Australia are lower and closer to the USA (Araghi et al , 2019), but not as low as seen in some countries of Latin America (Carioli et al , 2022). Trends for colorectal cancer in the studied countries showed favorable trends, both registered and projected.…”

“…The age of its onset is mainly 40 years and above of age, and the incidence rate increases with respect to age [28,29]. The mortality rate is second only to lungs cancer [30]. Prostate cancer has become one of the most common cancers among men in the world especially in Europe and the United States [21,22] with the incidence rate occurring more in African American men than any other racial group [31].…”
