Cancer as a Manifestation of Aberrant Chromatin Structure

Abstract: In this article we review many important epigenetic changes in early carcinogenesis and discuss the possibility of these alterations being targeted for therapeutic intervention in the future. Both regional DNA methylation and global chromatin packaging are interrelated partners that function in concert to control gene transcription. We first summarize briefly DNA methylation and its role in gene expression. Then, we focus on how the DNA is packaged into chromatin and the tight relationship between chromatin an… Show more

“…The 3D dose lattice can be generated with single or multiple arcs, with a dynamic Multileaf Collimator (MLC) gantry linear accelerator and/or non-coplanar focused beams to form a highly convergent dose distribution, such as the ones used for stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) or stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) [1][2]9]. This makes LATTICE Radiotherapy a practically achievable alternative to traditional GRID therapy, which delivers a highly heterogeneous dose distribution, anticipated to trigger the bystander effect of radiation [7].…”

“…Five patients (3%) had pre-treatment radiological features of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Histological diagnosis was (3)(4)(5). Total treatment time included an average of 20 minutes for patient set-up, followed by a median treatment time of 21 minutes (range 11-41 minutes).…”

“…Squamous cell carcinomas were treated with margins of 4 mm and 2 mm to cover microscopic extension and uncertainty, respectively. The CyberKnife radiosurgical technique for lung tumors has been described in several previous reports from our group [19][20][21][22][23]. The total system accuracy of the device and the respiratory motion tracking in a phantom has been reported as 1 mm in two recent articles [27,28].…”
