Canadian Political Science and the City: A Limited Engagement

Abstract: Abstract. This paper expands on the work of Higgins, whose 1979 review remains the only synthetic overview of the field, by presenting an updated analysis of the study of municipal, local and urban issues in Canadian political science. We conclude that despite several discursive shifts—from the descriptive works of the 1950s and 1960s, through to the blossoming of interdisciplinary research in the 1980s and 1990s—Higgins' principal conclusion, that the various streams of urban politics continue to be studied in… Show more

“…Keywords: school board elections, political candidates, gender, race, representation Mots-clés: élections des conseils scolaires, candidats et candidates politique, genre, minorités raciales, représentation A considerable body of literature has identified a diversity gap related to the limited proportion of women and racial minorities among elected officials in Canada (Andrew et al, 2008;Bashevkin, 2009;Black, 2008;Black, 2011;Siemiatycki, 2016). Given the centrality of provincial and federal legislative bodies in the Canadian federal system, political scientists have tended to focus their attention on these institutions when investigating trends in political representation (Cutler and Matthews, 2005;Taylor and Eidelman, 2010). However, these elected bodies make up a small minority of elected positions within Canada.…”

“…According to Andrew Sancton, one of Canada's leading scholars of urban politics, “the harsh reality is that we know very little about municipal voting behavior” (, p. 193). Taylor and Eidelman similarly lament the fact that “significant gaps” exist in the study of Canadian municipal voting behavior (, p. 971).…”
