Can Uppsala Model Explain the Internationalisation of Central European SMEs?

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to scrutinize some aspects of the Uppsala model whose applicability for SMEs' internationalisation is often questioned. This model explains internationalisation as a sequential process based on learning in which an enterprise increases its international commitment in incremental steps (Johanson and Vahlne, 1977). The assumptions of Uppsala model are discussed in conditions of SMEs from different countries, namely the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Austria and Germany. The paper is b… Show more

“…The Uppsala model could not be used to explain the internationalization of SMEs from specific countries (Fink and Kraus, 2007;Tuzov a et al, 2015). For example, the internationalization of many emerging and transition market firms deviates from the stage-wise internationalization pattern explained by the Uppsala model (Lamotte and Colovic, 2015), These firms do not initiate their internationalization activities close to the home country.…”

Fudalinski (2015) verifies how organizations manage risk during periods of heightened turbulence in international business.…”

“…The exceptions focus on the role of psychic distance through the Uppsala model or on selected and more specific aspects of psychic distance in the internationalization process. In the former group, studies investigate the role of psychic distance during the internationalization of Poland-based companies through the lens of the Uppsala model (Kłysik-Uryszek and Kuna-Marszałek, 2014) or the applicability of the Uppsala model for SMEs' internationalization among Polish, Czech, Slovakian, Austrian, and German companies (Tuzová et al, 2015). In the latter group, studies cover the importance of cultural distance for Polish, German, and British managers in their cross-border activities (Chapman et al, 2008), the importance of psychic distance perceived by Polish managers in the internationalization process on European markets (Olejnik- Nizielska, 2018), or when entering the Saudi Arabian market (Hauke-Lopes, 2018).…”
