A Tutorial for Modeling Real Options Lattices from Project Cash Flows

Context: several methods for evaluating real options have been extensively studied and published. But recombining binomial trees, known as lattices, are perhaps one of the most practical and intuitive approaches to model uncertainty and price project managerial flexibilities for real options applications. Although the Cox, Ross, and Rubinstein (1979) lattice model is simple to implement for financial options, modeling real options lattices requires a different approach such as the one proposed by Copeland and Antikarov (2001), which considers project cash flows as dividends in the lattice model. Objective: in this tutorial, we propose a code in an open-source software with intuitive guidelines to help researchers and practitioners model real options lattices from project cash flows. Method: our code considers the correct project’s volatility estimation, dividend yield modeling, and lattice building. Results: the results show how real options can affect the value of projects. Conclusions: as a contribution, this tutorial provides a simple mechanism for analyzing investment opportunities in projects that have uncertainty and flexibility.

Wind energy diffusion is of great importance to increase the diversity of the Brazilian energy matrix and decrease the country's dependence on hydrological variations. However, little is known about the current state technological development regarding wind technology in the country. Thus, the objective of this article is to analyze the current state of technological development regarding wind energy technology, by patent mapping from the National Institute of Intellectual Property (INPI). Among the main results, we highlight the identification of: i) the low level of Brazilian patenting; ii) the patenting predominance of the Southeast region; iii) the influence of the Brazilian wind generation market to increase the number of patents related to wind generation; iv) the lack of knowledge in some scientific fields, which affects the breadth of wind energy patents developed in the country; v) the low interest of the national power companies in developing R&D activities; and (vi) the reactive behavior of these companies with regard to the development of innovative activities.

This chapter presents and discusses the potential of power generation from last sugarcane harvest (2016/2017), mainly by the combustion of two by-products; bagasse and straw. Bioelectricity production from the bagasse and the straw is possible through the grinding sugarcane, and both are available in the driest period of the year (May to September) and match with the water shortage in the reservoirs of hydroelectric power plants to the same period. Brazil is the largest producer of sugarcane of the world, in 2016/2017 reaped 657,189.900 tons, this crop is concentrated in four states that are responsible for over 90% of the bioelectricity production. Considering 2016/2017 harvest, we have foreseen that the availability of bioelectricity could reach 74,994 GWh, but if we aggregate straw to the combustion at the boiler, the electricity produced would reach 111,558 GWh. This power energy produced is almost 20% of total power energy supply in 2016, when power generation was 570,562 GWh. This way, Brazil could increase the share of the renewable resources at its power energy matrix and avoid greenhouse gas emission. Moreover, we present a deep discussion about the current federal regulatory scope of Brazilian electricity market and how bioelectricity fits into this competitive market.
