Can the activation of analytic cognitive style determine endorsement of secular belief?

Abstract: The present study examined the effect of analytical thought priming on individual secular beliefs. In Study 1 (N = 64), we employed analytical thinking priming and examined whether such priming can influence the participants’ endorsement of secular belief. In Study 2 (N = 85), we employed another form of treatment condition to enhance analytical thinking and explored what components of secular beliefs were most affected by such condition. The results of both studies showed that participants primed to think wit… Show more

“…For example, analytic, cognitively sophisticated individuals exhibit more discerning social media use (Mosleh et al, 2021); they are less prone to various unfounded, epistemically suspect beliefs (Pennycook et al, 2015b), the so-called pseudo-profound bullshit (Pennycook et al, 2015a), and fake news (Bronstein et al, 2019;Pennycook and Rand, 2019), as well as religious beliefs (Pennycook et al, 2014(Pennycook et al, , 2020a. There is also some evidence suggesting that activation of analytic thinking can lead to a higher endorsement of (some domains of) secular belief (Hudiyana et al, 2019). In addition, recent research has indicated that individuals more prone to analytic thinking are also more likely to form or adhere to scientifically founded beliefs (Pennycook et al, 2020a;McPhetres et al, 2021).…”

“…However, due to differing interpretations of Muslim teachings and power positions in their respective political stages, Indonesian Muslims' political attitudes may not be a single spectrum. Some Muslim schools of thought (denomi nations) embrace modernity and the secular establishment, while others reject it, favoring a more totalitarian Islam (Hudiyana, Putra, Ariyanto, Brama, & Muluk, 2019). This spectrum becomes blurred when we consider that economic endorsements such as capitalism or socialism may not be polarized similarly.…”

“…In the Indonesian context, Hudiyana et al (2019) has explained that scientific thinking is not opposed to religion, but is opposed to religious fundamentalism. This finding may be related to the explanations of Falade (2019), who found that, in the development of science, the authoritarian effects of religion and politics are often obstacles, In other words, embracing religion does not encourage a person to become anti-science; however fundamentalism and the authoritarian effects of religion are factors in this tendency.…”
