Can red blood cell distribution width (RDW) level predict the severity of acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD)?

Abstract: Background: Elevated red blood cell distribution width (RDW) levels were associated with mortality in patients with stable chronic obstructive lung pulmonary diseases (COPD). There are limited data about RDW levels in acute exacerbation of COPD (AECOPD).Aim/Objective: The association of the RDW levels with the severity of AECOPD was evaluated according to admission location, (outpatient-clinic, ward and intensive care unit (ICU)).Methods: Cross sectional retrospective study was designed in tertiary care hospit… Show more

“…In a research on intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, patients with low levels of RDW were more likely to be with poor survival after curative resection 27 . Another research in Turkey found that in most patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations, the values of RDW were under the normal range and lower RDW was associated with disease severity 28 . It could be partly explained by the differences in the general characteristics between the cohorts in different studies.…”

“…Still, it it also leads to COPD patients death. [3][4][5] Heart failure is one of the most essential comorbidities in patients with AECOPD. COPD patients with systolic or diastolic heart failure have been reported to have a prevalence of 20% to 70%, with higher rates of hospitalization and mortality compared to patients without heart failure.…”

“…RDW mainly reacts to the coefficient of variation of red blood cells and is affected by chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, nutrient deficiency, and other factors. RBC distribution width is now widely used for the prognostic diagnosis of COPD, 13 bile duct surgery, 14 and chronic heart failure 15 . In this study, we retrospectively analysed plasma procalcitonin concentration and red blood cell distribution width at admission to improve the diagnostic value for prognosis in severely burned patients.…”
