Can Photothermal Post-Operative Cancer Treatment Be Induced by a Thermal Trigger?

Abstract: One of the current challenges in the post-operative treatment of breast cancer is to develop a local therapeutic vector for preventing recurrence and metastasis. Herein, we develop a core−shell fibrous scaffold comprising phase-change materials and photothermal/chemotherapy agents, as a thermal trigger for programmable-response drug release and synergistic treatment. The scaffold is obtained by in situ growth of a zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) shell on the surface of poly(butylene succinate)/lauric … Show more

“…Significant progress has been made in cancer treatment over the last few decades [1]. Among the existing treatment methods, photothermal therapy (PTT) has become a popular treatment because of its minimal biological invasiveness, high convenience, lack of systemic side effects and obvious therapeutic effect [2,3,4,5].…”

“…Numerous biodegradable polyesters based on SA have been synthesized, including poly(ethylene succinate), PBS, poly(butylene succinate- co -butylene adipate) (PBSA), perfluorobutanesulfonyl fluoride, and poly(butylene succinate- co -butylene 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylate). , SA can effectively control the thermal properties, crystallization ability, and mechanical performance of these polyesters without compromising their biodegradability. Furthermore, PBS containing only BS repeat units is already a commercialized biodegradable material, with established application in the medical field. …”

“…Electrospinning as a facile and generalizable method can produce electrospun nanofibrous patches with homogeneously dispersed nanoparticles, maximizing exposure of the active sites of nanoparticles . The implantable electrospun nanofibrous patch can also combine multiple therapeutic modalities for the synergistic treatment of cancer. …”
