PurposeIn recent years, crowdfunding has developed as a new fundraising alternative. Yet, the effects of the backing experience in reward and donation-based crowdfunding (DBCF) on well-being were researched only through qualitative practices. The current study offers a novel quantitative inquiry of the association between backing motivation and backers' well-being.Design/methodology/approachThe study is based on a uniform questionnaire distributed among 700 Israeli adults, which included questions about backing experience, sense of meaning and social welfare.FindingsThe results indicate that only intrinsic backing motivation is associated with the sense of meaning in life. Non-investment crowdfunding offers a platform for people who are intrinsically motivated to increase their sense of meaning in life. Moreover, the authors find that the tendency to back further projects is associated with backers' sense of meaning in life.Social implicationsThe findings can promote a better matching between backers' desire for living the good life and entrepreneurs' desire to reach their funding targets. Social welfare implications are discussed.Originality/valueThe linkage between backers' well-being and crowdfunding has not been explored in quantitative studies. Hence, the study offers a novel approach and some new insights on this linkage.

Modern economic theory asserts that consumers experiencing the scarcity problem should try to enlarge their budget. By contrast, relying on the ancient Greeks' perspective, we present a mathematical model demonstrating that higher investment in reducing material desires is positively associated with higher welfare. We present evidence from 999 participants aged 25–65 survey, showing that adopting the ancient Greek strategy for dealing with the gap between material desires and financial means is positively correlated with individuals' subjective well‐being, while adopting the modern economics strategy is not. Moreover, we show that the prudent desire management becomes less productive with age.

The Associations between Childhood Experiences and Occupational Choice Capability, and the Mediation of Societal Gender Roles

Experiences in family, school, and social life during childhood are associated with gender roles and occupational choice capability. This study examines how competent individuals are in occupational choice capability and the relationships of childhood experiences and gender roles with their competencies in occupational choice capability. The research is composed of 805 individuals aged 18 and older, who reside in Turkey. In the research, we used the Personal Information Form, Childhood Experiences Scale, Gender Roles Attitude Scale, and The Scale of Occupational Choice Capability. The SPSS 25 program and PROCESS-Macro were used to analyze the variables. The relationship between the scales was investigated using Pearson correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. According to the findings we obtained, individuals’ family and school life were positively correlated with their career choices, and family function sexism harmed their choice of profession. We also found gender roles had a mediating role in the relationship between school life and career choice.
