Can mean platelet volume and mean platelet volume/platelet count ratio be used as a diagnostic marker for sepsis and systemic inflammatory response syndrome?

Abstract: Objectives:To determine whether the mean platelet volume (MPV) and MPV/platelet (PLT) values can be used in the study of sepsis and systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS).Methods:In this retrospective case-controlled study, 69 sepsis, 69 SIRS patients, and 72 control group who were treated in the years 2012-2013 were reviewed, and both the MPV and MPV/PLT rates were evaluated in all groups at Kahramanmaras Sutcu Imam University Intensive Care Unit, Kahramanmaras, Turkey. Results:Statistically significan… Show more

“…In our study, PDW was not included in the evaluation and it was aimed to investigate only the relation of MPV adm , MPV 72h , ∆MPV 72h-adm parameters with mortality. Ates et al 38 found MPV and MPV/PLT ratio higher in patients with sepsis and SIRS than those of the control group. Gao et al 39 stated that MPV may be the most useful prognostic forecaster platelet indice, because they found that MPV was higher in nonsurvivors group of septic shock patients.…”

“…Adult and pediatric studies commonly suggest that platelet indices are beneficial to predict mortality or to diagnose the sepsis early [37][38][39][40] . However numerical data is so variable and our knowledge of the pediatric age group is limited 18,21,24 .…”

“…WBC values are not distinguishing in GN, GP and fungal sepsis. It has been determined that MPV is not determinative of sepsis and SIRS discrimination [29]. While there was a significant correlation between PCT, CRP, and MPV, there was no correlation with WBC.…”

“…In a study, a positive correlation between high PDW and MPV levels and severity of vascular injury was shown (27). MPV and MPR may be used in sepsis and systemic inflammatory response syndrome studies (28). MPV was also investigated in liver diseases such as steatosis, cirrhosis and hepatitis (29).…”
