Can imported cold food cause COVID-19 recurrent outbreaks? A review

Abstract: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is still spreading all over the world. Although China quickly brought the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) under control in 2020, sporadic outbreaks have recurred from time to time. Outbreaks since June 2020 have suggested that the imported cold food supply chain is a major cause for the recurrence and spread of COVID-19. Here we review recurrent outbreaks in China from June 2020 to March 2021, and we analyse the main causes for recur… Show more

“…China has gradually improved the prevention and control strategies 24 , 25 : (I) Strengthening the sampling inspection of imported cold‐chain products to find the source of infection in a timely manner; (II) Developing disinfectant and disinfection equipment in low‐temperature to comprehensively disinfect imported cold‐chain products and cut off transmission routes; (III) Enhancing vaccination, personal protection training and health monitoring for the protection of high‐risk population; (IV) Developing the technical guidelines for ranking and classifying SARS‐CoV‐2 contaminated cold‐chain foods; (V) Improving the sampling strategies for tracing the cold‐chain source. Indeed, following the first Dalian COVID‐19 outbreak in July 2020, the cold‐chain related outbreaks in China were limited to the cities importing cold chain products and did not spread to other provinces.…”

“…There have been instances of COVID-19 spread related to CCF events, and there is a chance that CCF is a carrier that facilitates the transmission [ 14 ]. This study uses 2018 global matrix data of CCF consumption and trade, NCF, and a CAN method to identify the core nodes and communities of the global CCFTN.…”

“…These findings indicate that frozen food is an important and potential source of the outbreak of COVID-19 [ 14 ]. In China, many batches of CCF have been detected for surviving COVID-19 ( Table S1 ).…”

“…To evaluate the risk of contracting the COVID-19 infection from contaminated environments, researchers focused on monitoring the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in food, water, wastewater, bio-solid waste, and sludge (Carraturo et al 2020). The virus is transmitted from contaminated cold food or food packaging material through person-to-thing-toperson transmission (Han and Liu 2021).…”
