Can Gamification Influence the Academic Performance of Students?

Abstract: Gamification along with a whole range of other active methodologies are being incorporated into university classrooms due to their potential benefits for student learning. The aim of this paper was to analyse how a multimodal learning environment based on gamification could affect the final grades of university students in a subject taught at the Faculty of Education in a spanish university. The research was made up of 133 Spanish university students (Mage = 19.60; SDage = 0.43 years old). A quasi-experimental… Show more

“…These same authors, in another similar study [42], confirmed improvements in the experimental group in cognitive performance but not in academic performance. However, in the work of Arufe-Giráldez et al [45], a higher academic performance was observed in university students in a gamified intervention during an academic year. This indicates that more studies are necessary to confirm a possible higher academic performance with gamified techniques.…”

“…Gamification design teaching is conducive to further promoting the quality of teaching ( Hernández-Fernández et al, 2020 ; Arufe Giráldez et al, 2022 ). In detail, the way students receive the knowledge changes from passive learning to active learning.…”

“…There are different game mechanics, such as those that focus on human behavior, those that are related to feedback, and those used to structure achievements and skills and show their progress in the game. Likewise, other mechanics can be applied to gamification in education, such as time constraints, content exploration, unlocking, and collaborative and competitive challenges, in addition to other game elements that allow for achieving goals and rewards [ 13 , 14 ].…”
