Adversity is viewed as both an inevitable and an important experience for elite athletes. The purpose of this study was to explore elite athletes’ perceptions of the experiences and characteristics that helped them overcome a shared sport-specific adversity. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 12 professional athletes (Mage = 27.25, SD = 3.28 yr) who had progressed to careers in the National Hockey League (NHL) despite not being selected in the annual amateur entry draft. Participants discussed their long-term objectives of playing in the NHL, previous experiences with adversity, certain psychological characteristics that facilitated their progression (e.g., competitiveness, passion, confidence), and the significance of social support as key factors that helped them overcome the initial and subsequent adversities associated with being unselected during the amateur entry draft. Practical implications and proposed avenues for future research are discussed in the context of the study’s limitations.

Denne studien utforskar korleis ein kan legge til rette for utvikling av motstandsdyktige spelarar i eit eliteserielag. Semistrukturerte intervju med tre trenarar og tre spelarar, som del av ein intervensjon, gir informasjon om psykososiale element som påverkar utviklingsprosessen. Forskingsleiar har vore ein del av trenarteamet til laget. Observasjonslogg og monotoreringsdata frå trening og kamp gav supplerande informasjon til analysen. To hovudtema stod fram: (a) opplevingar av trenarar og spelarar si handtering av ulike typar utfordringar og stress, og (b) samspelet mellom trenar og spelar på vegen til å bli meir motstandsdyktig. Informasjonen viser gjennom ulike oppfatningar av utfordringar korleis det er mogeleg å øve på å bli meir motstandsdyktig ved å utnytte både prestasjonsrelatert og organisatorisk stress som del av spelaren si rolle i laget. Undersøkinga framhevar to sentrale poeng knytt til relasjon og samhandling mellom trenar og spelar. Det må først skapast ei gjensidig forventningsavklaring mellom spelar og trenar. Samtidig ligg det hjå trenarane i undersøkinga ei tydeleg forventning om at spelarane viser vilje til læring. Det er spesielt sentralt for å få samspelet til å fungere med handtering av organisatorisk stress. Artikkelen viser korleis vi kan auke kvaliteten i arbeidet med å utfordre og gi sosial støtte for utvikling av motstandsdyktige fotballspelarar.

Schizophrenia: Developmental Variability Interacts with Risk Factors to Cause the Disorder

A new etiological model is proposed for schizophrenia that combines variability-enhancing nonspecific factors acting during development with more specific risk factors. This model is better suited than the current etiological models of schizophrenia, based on the risk factors paradigm, for predicting and/or explaining several important findings about schizophrenia: high co-morbidity rates, low specificity of many risk factors, and persistence in the population of the associated genetic polymorphisms. Compared with similar models, e.g., de-canalization, common psychopathology factor, sexual-selection, or differential sensitivity to the environment, this proposal is more general and integrative. Recently developed research methods have proven the existence of genetic and environmental factors that enhance developmental variability. Applying such methods to newly collected or already available data can allow for testing the hypotheses upon which this model is built. If validated, this model may change the understanding of the etiology of schizophrenia, the research models, and preventionbrk paradigms.
