Abstract: Adversity is viewed as both an inevitable and an important experience for elite athletes. “…(102) proposed discouraging early deselection, particularly during adolescence, to allow continued exposure to higher-level coaching and resources without the option of being deselected. However, previous research has illustrated that repeated incidences of selection and deselection may be more beneficial to achieving senior professional status (50). “…Like professional soccer, the pathways toward elite or professional hockey are paved with many obstacles that can be overcome with a high degree of resilience, motivation, and determination. Under such circumstances, late-born players who evolved in positive and favorable environments are potentially less affected by RAEs, which means that their social environments (coaches, parents, and teammates) may interact favorably toward the development of these psychological assets.…”

“…In this regard, some work has been conducted among younger ice hockey populations (Huard Pelletier and Lemoyne, 2022), and it seems relevant to go further with players who evolve at higher levels of competition. Future research could also be inspired from qualitative designs, to verify how late born players tend to overcome obstacles in their pathway to professional hockey (Herbison et al, 2019). Note also that performance indicators were based on game statistics, which is a global approximation of performance evaluation.…”
