Can Adaptive Interfaces Improve the Usability of Mobile Applications?

Abstract: Mobile applications are becoming increasingly widespread and complex. Many of these applications suffer from usability issues, including information overload, screen clutter, lack of task support and limited interaction mechanisms. Adaptive user interfaces (AUIs) have been proposed to address some of these usability issues. The aim of this paper is to investigate how AUIs can improve the usability of mobile applications. This paper discusses several simple types of adaptation that have been shown to yield sign… Show more

“…In addition, mobile data input techniques differ from the established techniques in desktop applications. In particular, the distinction between upper and lower case, or the keying of masses of text, remain elementary challenges in mobile applications [27]. Finally, mobile devices have limited capabilities in treating multiple applications simultaneously (e.g.…”

“…There are many research that have been put an effort to make interface more interactive and flexible to accomplish user needs and in a specific context conditions. Rothrock et al [14] has defined an adaptive interface as system adapting its displays and available actions to user's current goal and abilities by monitoring user status, system task and current situations [14]. The techniques for adaptations include what information to present, how to interact with the information and how to present the information [14].…”

“…As the users of the mobile phones are exponentially increasing, the usability of the mobile applications is turning into significant factor. Mobile applications employ interfaces that are interactive, but in fact complex and regularly confronted with usability challenges like screen clutter, restricted interaction instruments, shortage of assignment support and information overload [21,22]. This kind of complication is easily observable from the characteristics of the mobile devices.…”
