Can a Takt Plan Ever Survive Beyond the First Contact With the Trades On-Site?

Abstract: This study takes a critical look at Takt planning and takt control (TPTC) by analysing a successful case project. In the study, the digital system architecture and collected data are used for providing a process breakdown and analysis in terms of waste and potential root causes. The paper shows how vulnerable the TPTC is for disruptions caused by a lead waste, making-do/task diminishment, and ad-hoc tolerance management. Based on the digital footprint of the project, an explanation is given why good results in… Show more

“…Based on the literature review, a takt production monitoring and control model like this has not been previously developed. However, Alhava et al [32] have somewhat similarly recommended utilizing a matrix to visualize the current status of the tasks in takt production monitoring. Furthermore, in non-takted construction, Kenley & Seppänen [19], have similarly proposed documenting the progression of tasks and locations in a matrix form.…”

“…Alhava et al [32] have somewhat similarly proposed that the collection of the takt production realization data should be carried out by the trade partners' foremen and workers with a mobile application. However, according to Alhava et al [32], the utilization rate for the application has been very low in their case project. Based on the case of this study, the data collection is recommended to be carried out by the main contractor's foremen.…”

“…Even though takt production can be successfully implemented without digitalization, recent studies (e.g., Alhava et al 2019) suggest that digital tools can greatly enhance realtime situational awareness, which is necessary to excel with fast-paced takt production control (Lehtovaara et al 2021). Transparent and up-to-date progress information helps production stakeholders plan and control their actions proactively and collaboratively, enabling efficient flow of processes and operations and effective flow of information (Uusitalo et al 2019) and material (Tetik et al 2019a) flows.…”

“…Here, general challenges mean obstacles to achieving the objectives of takt, rather than obstacles linked to a specific type of projects (such as residential construction, hospitals, infrastructure etc.). Therefore, there is a need for more data gathering and analyses to help Takt Planning and Takt Control (TPTC)-projects identify and reduce the number of obstacles (Alhava et al 2019). To reduce this need, the following research questions will be studied:…”
