CAMcog as a screening tool for diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment and dementia in a Brazilian clinical sample of moderate to high education

Abstract: The CAMCOG discriminated controls and MCI from demented patients, but was less accurate to discriminate MCI from controls. The best cut-off value to differentiate controls and demented was higher than suggested in the original publication, probably because only cases of mild to moderate dementia were included. This is important given the need for a diagnostic at earlier stages of Alzheimer's disease.

“…Nunes et al 10 showed that CAMCOG presented a sensitivity of 64% and a specificity of 88%. One previous study, however, which explored psychometric properties (reliability, discriminative capacity and factorial structure) of the CAMCOG, found an excellent reliability of the individual subscales and high levels of sensitivity and specificity of the instrument in differentiating between demented and non-demented individuals 31 .…”

“…A higher rate of patients with MCI could be identified when the item scores were analyzed, which was not possible when only MMSE final scores were considered. ROC curve analyses were performed to determinate cutoff scores in the Cambridge Cognitive Examination (CAMCOG) for MCI patients, but discrimination between MCI subjects and controls with this method showed low accuracy 10 .…”

“…7 In brief, patients were examined by clinicians specialized in the evaluation of cognitive disorders. The clinical assessment included the Cambridge Mental Disorders of the Elderly Examination (CAMDEX) interview, which yields the Cambridge Cognitive Examination (CAMCOG) and the MMSE scores.…”
