Cambio climático y sustentabilidad urbana: comparativo de seis ciudades andinas intermedias

Abstract

Urbanized areas in the intertropical Andes region have apparent advantages in climate change scenarios, a situation that accelerates their growth and socio-environmental vulnerability. With the objective of analytically comparing six intermediate Andean cities, the structure of this research stands on climatic parameters and sustainability indicators, with an emphasis on urban metabolism. The findings show an increase in temperature and variability of rainfall, correlation between high Andean ecosystems and availability of water resources, dependence on the national energy network of hydroelectric sources, inadequate management of solid waste, insufficient treatment of wastewater and high susceptibility related to socio-economic indicators. In conclusion, cities located in the northern part of the Andes have a better balance of the studied parameters and would be in better conditions to face climate change.
