“…Previous studies suggest that calbindin-immunoreactivity is present in the bulb by P1 (Enderlin et al, 1987;Bastianelli and Pochet, 1995), although our observations suggest only rudimentary staining even at P10. This discrepancy could be either due to procedural differences or to the fact that many antisera against calbindin crossreact with calretinin , which is precociously expressed in the bulb.…”

“…Of the three calcium-binding proteins, calretininimmunoreactivity appears earlier in all regions of the brain, including the bulb, where it is present at birth (Andressen et al, 1993;Bastianelli and Pochet, 1995). Our results support previous finding that calretinin-positive olfactory nerve bundles are common and often fill entire glomeruli, suggesting the convergence of receptor axons with strong calretinin expression Bastianelli and Pochet, 1994).…”

“…In Xenopus, too, the mitral cells are the first cells to differentiate in the olfactory bulb, appearing much earlier than interneurons (Fritz et al, 1996). Interestingly, in rat pups the mitral cells of the main olfactory bulb were also CR-ir (Bastianelli and Pochet, 1995), and similar results have been reported in developing bulbs of other mammals (Kakuta et al, 2001). In adult brown trout, however, most mitral-like cells exhibit faint or very faint immunoreactivity except in the proximity of a few glomerular regions, suggesting down-regulation of CR expression with age.…”
