Objective: To evaluate the effect of applying silicon products on morphological variables, quality indices, and mineral content of Pinus devoniana seedlings during the nursery stage. Design/Methodology/Approach: Four-month-old nursery seedlings produced on substrate were used. These were supplied with silicon in soluble powder applied on the substrate, and foliar liquid presentation and then evaluated in their morphological variables, foliar mineral content, and quality indices. Results: The application of soluble silicon powder had a positive effect on stem length; while the stem diameter was favored by both applications, which improves its storage capacity. Regarding plant biomass production, the application of soluble silicon powder resulted in higher values of aerial biomass, while root production was favored by foliar liquid application. Plant quality was not affected by the silicon application from either the soluble powder or the liquid; however, the liquid foliar application had the best effect for determining variables of the species. The silicon application did not affect other essential element absorption. Limitations/Implications of the study: The results and conclusions are limited to Pinus devoniana plants in their nursery stage under the described management and substrate conditions. Findings/Conclusions: The silicon application favored growth, and did not affect the plant´s quality or other elements´ absorption. The soluble powder was positive for stem length, and the foliar application for root development benefited the stem diameter.

La supervivencia de las plantas en vivero se logra con el uso constante de fungicidas con base química, dichos fungicidas causan daños al ambiente y al aplicador, por tanto, se han buscado fungicidas alternativos con la misma efectividad. El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar el efecto de fungicidas orgánicos para controlar el ataque de Fusarium. Se utilizó un diseño experimental completamente al azar con arreglo factorial para probar 6 tipos diferentes de fungicidas: cuatro orgánicos (ajo, canela, azufre, extracto de cola de caballo), uno químico (tecto60®) y un testigo (agua), en tres especies de pino: Pinus patula Schiede ex Schltdl, P. oaxacana Mirov y P. ayacahuite Ehrenb. ex Schltdl. La unidad experimental consistió de 90 charolas de 24 plantas cada una. Las 2,160 plantas (720 plantas por especie) se monitorearon cada 15 días durante 6 meses, donde se registró un total de 2.2 % de plantas muertas. La especie P. oaxacana presentó mayor mortalidad con 1.1 % de plantas muertas, mientras que P. ayacahuite mostró mayor resistencia con tan solo un 0.3 % de plantas pérdidas. El fungicida químico presentó resultados mejores, en tanto que, el azufre fue mejor dentro de los fungicidas orgánicos con 1.6 % de plantas muertas. Sin embargo, no se encontraron diferencias estadísticas significativas (p > 0.05) de los factores estudiados, lo que sugiere una efectividad similar en la aplicación de los diferentes fungicidas. El encontrar un fungicida alternativo eficaz, permitiría reducir costos, daños a la planta, al ambiente y al aplicador.

The objective of this work was to evaluate seedlings quality of the tree species Agonandra brasiliensis under different doses of the controlled release fertilizer (CRF) Osmocote® and recipient volumes. The experiment was set up in a factorial design for two recipient volumes (1.8 L and 2.2 L) and five CRF doses (0.0; 0.5; 1.0; 2.0; and 3.0 g L-1 of substrate). Four repetitions of one plant each were used. After transplanting seedlings, stem height, stem collar diameter, and the robustness index (RI) were measured in a monthly basis during eight months. The highest seedlings growth was observed with the CRF Osmocote® dose of 2.0 g L-1 and recipients of 2.2 L. The treatment with CRF dose of 2.0 g L-1 in 240 days presented higher initial accumulated growth in height of A. brasiliensis seedlings (mean = 31.38 cm). Seedlings under the dose of 2.0 g L-1 presented 85.90% increase of stem height in relation to the control (substrate without CRF). CRF Osmocote® had positive effect on growth of A. brasiliensis seedlings. Growth was influenced by the different CRF doses and recipient volumes, both for the variables stem height and stem collar diameter and for the RI. The dose 2.0 g L-1 allowed greater accumulated growth in height and diameter in 240 days.
