Calibration of piezoresistive shape-memory alloy strain sensors

Abstract: Continuous strain measurement on fibre-reinforced structures demands mechanical sensors with superior fatigue resistance. Shape-memory alloy wires are predestined for strain sensors utilising their strong piezo-resistance. Calibration of these sensors is necessary in order to extract mechanical data. Therefore, four-point bending of glass-fibre reinforced plastic specimens with applied strain sensors and an optical reference measuring system is used to calibrate and compare shape-memory alloy sensors and stand… Show more

“…In order to determine the operational reliability of the GFRP construction, strain gauges were applied to the GFRP components when operating the Cargo Cruiser vehicle to enable structural health monitoring (SHM) for reliability tests and possible reduction in safety factors in lightweight construction. Pseudoelastic shape memory alloys (SMAs) are successfully used for this purpose in order to achieve a long service life of mechanical sensors [17,18]. The readout of SMA sensors during vehicle operation was tested by an ESP32 microcontroller.…”

“…Nitinol, a popular SMA material, usually has a stroke of approximately 4–8% of its original length [ 14 , 15 ]. However, it is possible to convert this minor deformation into stronger out-of-plane deformations by integrating it into a polymeric matrix [ 16 ]. The design and fabrication of an integrated sensor system capable of discriminating among different stimuli for motion monitoring are challenging.…”

“…The sensing signals can be divided into a force signal [ 49 ], capacitive signal [ 50 ], current signal [ 51 ], and a combination of voltage and current signal [ 52 ]. Similarly, different sensing signals based on SMAs can also sense strain [ 53 , 54 ]. In this research, we propose a soft robot module driven by SCPAM strings with a proprioceptive sensing capability.…”
