Conjugated polymers and small molecules based on alternating electron donating (D) and electron accepting (A) building blocks have led to state-of-the-art organic solar cell materials governing efficiencies beyond 10%. Unfortunately, the connection of D and A building blocks via cross-coupling reactions does not always proceed as planned, which can result in the generation of side products containing D-D or A-A homocoupling motifs. Previous studies have reported a reduced performance in polymer and small molecule solar cells when such defect structures are present. A general consensus on the impact of homocouplings on device performance is, however, still lacking, as well as a profound understanding of the underlying causes of the device deterioration. To differentiate the combined effect of molecular weight and homocouplings in polymer solar cells, a systematic study on a small molecule system (DTS(FBBTh2)2) is presented here. The impact of homocouplings on the blend nanomorphology, thermal, and electrooptical properties is investigated. It is demonstrated that small quantities of homocouplings (<10%) already lead to sub-optimal device performance, as this strongly impacts the molecular packing and electronic properties of the photoactive layer. These results highlight the importance of material purity and pinpoint homocoupling defects as one of the most probable reasons for batch-to-batch variations.

Phosphonium‐based polythiophene conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) with three different counterions (dodecylsulfate, octylsulfate and perfluorooctane sulfonate) are synthesized to determine how the nature of the counterion affects the thermal properties, the self‐assembly in thin films and the performance as the cathode interfacial layer in polymer solar cells (PSCs). The counterion has a significant effect on the thermal properties of the CPEs, affecting both their glass transition and crystalline behaviour. Grazing‐incidence wide‐angle X‐ray scattering studies also indicate that changing the nature of the counterion influences the microstructural organization in thin films (face‐on versus edge‐on orientation). The affinity of the CPEs with the underlying photoactive layer in PSCs is highly correlated with the counterion species. Finally, in addition to an increase of the power conversion efficiency of ca 15% when using these CPEs as cathode interfacial layers in PSCs, a higher device stability is noted, compared to a reference device with a calcium interlayer. © 2020 Society of Industrial Chemistry

Optimizing the post-production annealing conditions of polymer:fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells is vitally important, not only for fine-tuning the morphology -thus increasing the efficiency -but also for retaining the desired morphology during long-term operation. However, optimal conditions for annealing temperatures and times can only be chosen, once thermal transition temperatures and annealing kinetics of the blends are well-known. For instance, for systems with glass transition temperatures (T g ) lower than the maximum device operation temperature of 80°C, the mobility needed for morphology coarsening is present, leading to efficiencies decreasing in the course of time. Using advanced fast-scanning thermal analysis techniques, the formation of nuclei and growth of crystals during heating or cooling can be reduced or avoided, and thus, the fast crystallization processes occurring during annealing of the polymer:fullerene blends can be followed. In this study, non-isothermal and isothermal crystallization kinetics of the P3HT:PCBM (poly(3-hexyl thiophene: [6,6] -phenyl C 61 -butyric acid methyl ester) and P3HT:bis-PCBM blends are investigated and compared by using Rapid Heating Cooling Calorimetry (RHC).
