Introduction: An ageing of population is becoming more and more common. With age, the functionality and efficiency of the body decreases. As a result, the time spent by seniors on physical activity is shortened and physical fitness decreases. For this reason, the physical fitness of seniors should be regularly checked and they should be encouraged to take up physical activity. There are many proven and reliable tests used to assess physical fitness. Materials and methods: The study group consisted of 40 people (31 women and 9 men), aged 60-78 years. The tests used in following study were: the SPPB questionnaire, handgrip strength test, and arm and calf circumference measurements. An attempt was made to find sociodemographic factors that could influence the level of physical fitness. It was checked whether physical fitness and physical activity depend on age, gender and BMI. It was checked how much time older people spend on physical activity during the day and week. The study confirmed that physical fitness decreases with age. Results: Tests and interviews have shown that people who spend more than 60 minutes a day on physical activity achieve higher scores on the SPPB questionnaire. These results were applicable to both women and men. Studies in a larger and more diverse population would need to be repeated in order to further confirm these results and draw more conclusions.

Background Falls are an important health problem that can lead to morbidity and mortality in geriatric patients. In this study examined, various factors associated with falls and fear of falling in geriatric patients were examined. Methods This was a prospective, analytical study, and the sample size was calculated to be 320 participants with a confidence level of 95% and a margin of error of 0.05. Patients who met the inclusion criteria were evaluated during home visits or hospitalizations. An 11-question sociodemographic and clinical characteristics questionnaire was developed by the researchers after reviewing the literature using a data collection form. The FRAIL Scale, Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool, Barthel Index, Itaki Fall Risk Scale, Six-Item Screener, Tinetti Balance and Gait Test, and Geriatric Depression Scale-Short Form (GDS-SF) were used to evaluate whether the participants had geriatric syndromes. Results The mean age of the 320 participants was 81.52 ± 7.57 years, and approximately half of the participants were female. The rate of malnutrition was 77.8%. A total of 57.2% of the participants had environmental hazards in their homes, 58.8% had a history of falls, 54.4% had a fear of falling, and 44.1% had experienced an injury due to a fall. There were statistically significant correlations between a history of falls and fear of falls and age, calf circumference, the number of medications used, environmental hazards in the home, fragility, malnutrition risk, and the Itaki Fall Risk Scale, Barthel Index, total Tinetti Balance and Gait Test, and total GDS-SF scores. Conclusions The incidence of falls in this study was high, and falls were associated with general health status, age, and nutritional status. In addition, using a single scale for determining the risk of falls is not appropriate, and many parameters should be included in screenings.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown a relationship between calf circumference (CC) and outcomes in hospitalized patients. AIMS: To investigate the relationship between CC and clinical and nutritional outcomes in older in-patients (OiP) in a surgery ward. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study with 417 OiP in a surgery ward. Clinical variables, anthropometry, and nutritional screening instruments such as subjective global assessment (SGA), mini nutritional assessment (MNA), and nutritional risk screening (NRS) were used in the investigation. The tests Pearson’s chi-square, Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, and Spearman’s coefficient, and multiple linear regression analyses were used to review the factors associated with CC. RESULTS: Lower CC values were found in the age group 80 years and over (p<0.0001), presence of complications (p=0.0269), NRS (p<0.0001), SGA (p<0.0001), and MNA (p<0.0001). Gender (p=0.0011; partial R2=0.01151), age (p=0.0002; partial R2=0.06032), body mass index (p≤0.0001; partial R2=0.40820), and arm circumference (p≤0.0001; partial R2=0.11890) are variables that together were associated with CC. There was also a relationship between SGA (p=0.0166; partial R2=0.00605) and absence of complications during hospitalization (p=0.0047; R2=0.01154) with CC. CONCLUSIONS: Gender, age, body mass index, and arm circumference were jointly associated with CC, in addition to SGA and absence of complications. The CC is a relevant indicator for OiP in the clinical practice.
