“…4, 2007 Recently ITV was coupled to axially viewed systems and the precision and detection limits obtained from single element solutions were impressive. [80][81][82] Sample is deposited onto or into a rhenium probe and the probe is inserted into a small volume vaporization chamber that is attached to a typical ICP OES torch. Micro-samples of liquids, slurries, or solids are dried, charred and vaporized into the chamber by applying progressively higher electrical power levels.…”

“…The improvement in detection limits enabled direct elemental analysis from sub-micro amounts of sample. For example, of the Ca content of a 0.1 nL volume individual Paramecium cell 12 and of the Ca and Mg content in 10 pL (y8 ng) microscopic, single grains of pollen, thus further expanding the analytical capabilities of the ICP to include, potentially, other solid nano-samples as well. It would be interesting to see if the typical differential thermal vaporization of ETV 6,7 may be applied to ITV as well, so as to address (some) of the matrix effects reported for axially viewed ICP-AES.…”

“…A Spectro Ciros CCD ICP-OES (Spectro Analytical Instruments, Kleve, Germany) with axial plasma viewing similar to previous systems was used. 2,3,7 A significant modification to the system was the installation of a short depth-of-field lens system [20][21][22][23] allowing a more uniform region of the plasma to be viewed. Instrument settings optimized for final performance are shown in Table 2.…”

“…This system produces equivalent signal : noise ratios to conventional axial ICP with lower blank %RSD enabling analysis of rare earth and similar elements, including those with sensitive lines in the VUV region. 22,23 One such element with sensitive VUV lines of particular concern in biological situations is chlorine. 2 Worldwide, approximately 4 Â 10 8 ha of land are affected by excess salinity (as NaCl) due to deforestation, irrigation, and consequent rising groundwaters.…”
