Cadmium (Cd) is a heavy metal which affects many systems in humans and animals as a consequence of environmental and industrial pollution. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of chronic Cd toxicity on blood pressure and plasma viscosity. Experimental group rats were given doses that contained 15 ppm CdCl₂ in drinking water for 8 weeks. The systolic blood pressure and heart rate were measured from rats’ tails and recorded by plethysmography every two weeks. Blood samples were drawn, Cd levels were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer and plasma viscosity values by viscometer. Blood Cd levels were found to be significantly higher in the experimental group compared to the control group (p < 0.001). The whole blood analysis was made by an analyzer. Polymorphonuclear leukocytes and monocytes increased (p < 0.01) and lymphocyte number (p < 0.05) decreased in the experimental group. Viscosity values were 2.21 ± 0.54 and 1.62 ± 0.31 centipoises in the experimental and control groups, respectively (p < 0.001). In the experimental group, changes in systolic blood pressure between weeks were significant (p < 0.001) and were found to be correlated with plasma viscosity (p < 0.001). In the experimental group, changes in heart rate between weeks were significant (p < 0.001). According to our findings, Cd toxicity may lead to an increase in blood pressure by increasing plasma viscosity.

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic element ubiquitous in the environment total of eighty urine samples checked using primary data. Adult males and females aged 18-78 years old were the respondents. Study results showed that Cd levels from the wells revealed that 73 respondents (91.3%) had exposed to Cd higher than normal levels (5 µg/L). 14 urine samples (17.5%) had high Cd levels above the normal limits and 48 urine samples had high β 2 -MG-U levels. There was a significant correlation between the Cd levels from the wells and β 2 -MG-U levels (r = 0.278, p = 0.012). UCd levels had also significant correlation with β 2 -MG-U levels (r = 0.29, p = 0.009).

Background: Cigarette smoking interferes with the metal homeostasis of the human body, which plays a crucial role for maintaining the health. A significant flux of heavy metals, among other toxins, reaches the lungs through smoking. In the present study, the relationship between toxic element (TE) exposure via cigarette smoking and hypertension incidence in population living in Dublin, Ireland is investigated. Methods: The different brands of cigarette (filler tobacco, filter and ash) consumed by the studied population were analyzed for cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), and lead (Pb). The concentrations of TEs in biological samples and different components of cigarette were measured by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrophotometer after microwave-assisted acid digestion. The validity and accuracy of the methodology were checked using certified reference materials. Results: The filler tobacco of different branded cigarettes contains Cd, Ni and Pb concentrations in the ranges of 1.73-2.02, 0.715-1.52 and 0378-1.16 pg/cigarette, respectively. The results of this study showed that the mean values of Cd, Ni and Pb were significantly higher in scalp hair and blood samples of hypertensive patients in relation to healthy controls, while the difference was significant in the case of smoker patients (p < 0.001). The levels of all the three TEs were 2-3 folds higher in scalp hair and blood samples of non-hypertensive smoker subjects as compared to nonsmoker controls. Conclusion: The high exposure of toxic metals as a result of cigarette smoking may be synergistic with risk factors associated with hypertension.
