C‐type natriuretic peptide plasma levels increase in patients with chronic heart failure as a function of clinical severity

Abstract: Backgound: C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP), secreted by the endothelium and the heart, is structurally related to atrial and brain natriuretic peptides, but its clinical significance in chronic heart failure (CHF) is controversial. Aim: To investigate the role of CNP in CHF, plasma CNP levels were determined in a prospective series of 133 patients with CHF (age 64F1 years, left ventricular ejection fraction (EF), 31.5F0.7%, meanFS.E.M.) and in 21 age-matched healthy subjects. Methods and results: CNP was meas… Show more

“…In symptomatic HF patients, plasma concentrations of both CNP and NT-proCNP are significantly elevated compared to controls and are associated with HF disease severity expressed by NYHA functional class and EF [134]. Interestingly, CNP levels are also increased in patients with asymptomatic LV dysfunction [135].…”

“…Initial studies of patients with CHF demonstrated that the plasma CNP concentration was similar to that in control subjects [4,5]. More recently, Del Ry et al [18] found that CNP levels were increased in patients with CHF as a function of clinical severity.…”

“…After the remaining product was dissolved in 300–500 μl of assay buffer, 100 μl of the resulting mixture was used to perform the immunometric assay 7. The average CNP recovery was calculated to be 74.8%.…”
