This paper explores the question as to 'what do organisations that are adapting to climate change look like?' Examples are drawn from a survey of statutory regulations, guiding principles and organisational documents shaping current practice, with particular emphasis on the water and conservation sectors of industrialised nations. In so far as it is possible to distil recurring themes into common traits, nine hallmarks are identified. These include visionary leadership, objective setting, risk and vulnerability assessment, guidance for practitioners, organisational learning, low-regret adaptive management, multipartner working, monitoring and reporting progress and effective communication. Recognising that adaptation is highly context and scale dependent, an organisation might not necessarily exhibit all these features. However, our inventory provides a practical basis for reviewing the priorities and progress on adaptation capacity building within public and private sector organisations alike.

Rapid warming of the Mediterranean Sea threatens marine biodiversity, particularly key ecosystems already stressed by other impacts such as Posidonia oceanica meadows. A 6-year monitoring of seawater temperature and annual P. oceanica shoot demography at Cabrera Archipelago National Park (Balearic Islands, Western Mediterranean) allowed us to determine if warming influenced shoot mortality and recruitment rates of seagrasses growing in relative pristine environments. The average annual maximum temperature for 2002-2006 was 1 1C above temperatures recorded in 1988-1999 (26.6 1C), two heat waves impacted the region (with seawater warming up to 28.83 1C in 2003 and to 28.54 1C in 2006) and the cumulative temperature anomaly, above the 1988-1999 mean annual maximum temperature, during the growing season (i.e. degree-days) ranged between 0 1C in 2002 and 70 1C in 2003. Median annual P. oceanica shoot mortality rates varied from 0.067 year À1 in 2002 to 0.123 year À1 in 2003, and exceeded recruitment rates in all stations and years except in shallow stations for year 2004.Interannual fluctuations in shoot recruitment were independent of seawater warming (P40.05). P. oceanica meadows experienced a decline throughout the study period at an average rate of À0.050 AE 0.020 year À1 . Interannual variability in P. oceanica shoot mortality was coupled (R 2 40.40) to seawater warming variability and increasing water depth: shoot mortality rates increased by 0.022 year À1 (i.e. an additional 2% year À1 ) for each additional degree of annual maximum temperature and by 0.001 year À1 (i.e. 0.1% year À1 ) for each accumulated degree water temperature remained above 26.6 1C during the growing season. These results demonstrate that P. oceanica meadows are highly vulnerable to warming, which can induce steep declines in shoot abundance as well indicating that climate change poses a significant threat to this important habitat.

River flow and water temperature are fundamental controls of freshwater ecosystems. Hence, future warming could impact valued habitats and species, particularly those with cold water preferences (such as salmonids). Warming could also exacerbate existing environmental pressures or diminish the effectiveness of management interventions. Climate model projections provide compelling evidence of the need for adaptation despite uncertainty about the timing, nature, and distribution of impacts on water quality, vulnerable species, and habitats. Low‐regret adaptation options to manage temperature impacts include increasing riparian shade, enhancing thermal refugia, and removing thermal barriers or hotspots. Indirect controls include managing river flows through abstraction and discharge regulation, moderating flow control structures, and manipulating channel hydromorphology. However, fundamental gaps in understanding may limit the effectiveness of some of these measures, leading to undesired side effects, wasted resources, ineffectual outcomes, or limited uptake. These knowledge gaps include where to target measures, how to implement in different situations, how to maximize co‐benefits and integrate with other policy objectives, and how to support implementation across rural and agricultural landscapes. Despite many uncertainties, restoration of riparian shade and river flows has the potential to deliver multiple benefits even if this does not include retarding rates of warming.
