Since the ability of Workforce Management Systems to handle mobility induced challenges of mobile environments like data-communication cut-offs, reduced network bandwidth, and security concerns improved recently, the optimization efforts of mobile enterprises increasingly focus on the organizational setup of their mobile environment. This includes issues like, e.g., the dimension and staffing of regional subdivisions, qualification balance of the workforce, and resource allocation strategies. While this multitude of possible adjustment parameters for optimization prevents from the analytical prediction of organizational change efforts, simulation is a promising approach to analyze mobile environments and their change.In this work we present a formal model representing a generalization of mobile environments. This model can be utilized to examine the cost situation and performance of both real mobile enterprises and projected future development scenarios of such enterprises. The model is developed using colored petri nets (CPN) and the software suite CPN Tools. We show that our model is capable of predicting the outcomes of organizational change projects by the utilization of simulation and present a validation of our model based on real-world data of a German gas and power supply.

There are several techniques and tools that attempt to effectively represent different modeling perspectives according to business process modeling purpose and goals. One of widely used techniques for process modeling is process maps. The technique is based on flowcharts and one of its most important advantages, that is extremely important in early phases of business process change projects, is that models are easily understandable to all members of a project group. It is believed that this technique can provide only basic facilities in representing processes and is inappropriate for simulation. The main objective of this paper is to show that process maps have all elements required for simulation and that they have some other benefits, very important for business process renovation, that are discussed in the paper.

We consider how the student recruitment process might be improved to optimize performance with particular reference to the clearing process. A Design Science Research (DSR) methodology was used which entails learning through artefact production and data was collected from interviews, observation and document analysis. The logic of the clearing process was modelled using a process-oriented modelling technique. An 'As Is' clearing process model was created to analyze the process, and a 'To Be' clearing process model developed. The improved model has been verified by domain experts and promises to enhance the clearing process in terms of cost saving and resource utilization.
