SUMMARYLocomotor performance is linked to fitness and health of animals and is expected to be under strong selection. However, interindividual variation in locomotor performance is pronounced in many species. It was our aim to investigate the relative importance of energy metabolism and calcium handling in determining sprint and sustained locomotion in the zebrafish (Danio rerio). Sprint and sustained performance (U crit ) varied independently from each other. Using in vivo electroporation, we found that increased parvalbumin protein concentration improved both sprint and sustained locomotion. This is the first demonstration that parvalbumin plays a role in determining whole-animal performance. High sprint performance fish had greater mRNA concentrations of the metabolic regulators PPAR and PGC1 compared with fish with poor sprint performance. High sustained performance fish, in contrast, had greater concentrations of PGC-1 and PGC-1. The increased expression of these metabolic regulators indicates an enhancement of the metabolic machinery in high performance animals. Sprint performance is also enhanced by creatine kinase activity, which may be associated with increased PPAR mRNA concentration. Ryanodine receptor (RyR) and sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca 2+ -ATPase 1 (SERCA1) mRNA concentrations were significantly increased in high sustained performance fish, while parvalbumin 2, dihydropyridine (DHPR) receptor and SERCA2 mRNA levels were increased in fish with high sprint velocities. Sustained performance was more sensitive to experimentally induced decreases in RyR and DHPR activity than sprint performance. We provide mechanistic explanations of why locomotor performance differs between individuals, which is important for understanding ecological and sporting success, disease and the evolutionary processes underlying selection.

The European abalone Haliotis tuberculata is of economical importance in Europe, and recently in France where most of the consumed abalones remained wild animals fished on the coast. Recently, the creation of hatcheries allowed the production of cultured animals, and aquaculture is in progress. To optimize selective breeding programs, different studies were performed on adults and on their progenies. First, ten adult families, assumed to be bi-parental and produced in 2007 were analyzed. As these families were developed at the beginning of the hatchery production, the parentage of the individual necessitated to be tested. The progenies parentage assignment was done by using eight microsatellite DNA loci. In fine, the heritability was estimated from the analysis of variance of seven full-sib families which include from 23 to 27 progenies. Heritability estimate was the higher for length, width and weight (0.37, 0.29 and 0.40 respectively). A high correlation was also shown between these heritable traits which can be useful during animal breeding. Shell color traits were also analyzed, using image treatment procedure. Two traits were selected according to the global color of the shell: red color and hue. The distribution of these traits evidenced a polygenic genetic control of shell color and measure of heritability evidenced a high to medium value for red color (Cr) and Hue (H) (0.33 and 0.20 respectively). No correlation was shown between growth and this parameter. In a second time, juveniles families produced in 2010 were studied from parents issued of the first selection. A correlation between size and density at juvenile stage was established but a statistical analysis demonstrated, by using density as co-variable a significant effect of family on size. In these conditions, growth is highly heritable (0.74). This study is a first step toward the use of genetic markers for selection, but also a step toward the breeding improvement of European abalone.

A promising route for understanding the origin and diversification of organismal form is through studies at the intersection of evolution and development (evo-devo). While much has been learned over the last two decades concerning macroevolutionary patterns of developmental change, a fundamental gap in the evo-devo synthesis is the integration of mathematical population and quantitative genetics with studies of how genetic variation in natural populations affects developmental processes. This micro-evo-devo synthesis requires model organisms with which to ask empirical questions. Threespine stickleback fish (Gasterosteus aculeatus), long a model for studying behavior, ecology and evolution, is emerging as a prominent model micro-evo-devo system. Research on stickleback over the last decade has begun to address the genetic basis of morphological variation and sex determination, and much of this work has important implications for understanding the genetics of speciation. In this paper we review recent threespine stickleback micro-evo-devo results, and outline the resources that have been developed to make this synthesis possible. The prospects for stickleback research to speed the micro-(and macro-) evo-devo syntheses are great, and this workhorse model system is well situated to continue contributing to our understanding of the generation of diversity in organismal form for many more decades.
