Burrow systems evince non-solitary geomyid rodents from the Paleogene of southern Mexico

Abstract: We describe a new complex burrow system produced by geomyids in southern Mexico. Yaviichnus inyooensis igen. isp. nov. is composed of main large chambers near the top of the paleosol, from which shafts showing different morphologies and orientations radiate, some of them ending in or connected to small deeper chambers. Gregorymys spp. is proposed as the producer based on its fossorial habits, abundance in the outcrops, presence of remains inside the burrows, and paired grooves in the walls, which are compatibl… Show more

“…Two uranium–lead dating maximum depositional ages of 30.6 ± 0.77 and 30.62 ± 0.67 Ma, for detrital zircon grains from sandstone beds occurring above the bottom and top of the vertebrate fossil-bearing interval, indicate an early Oligocene age for the formation (Guerrero-Arenas et al . 2020; Jiménez-Hidalgo et al . 2021).…”

“…The fossiliferous sediments and associated fauna (Iniyoo Local Fauna) were initially regarded as late Eocene (Jiménez-Hidalgo et al, 2015) or middle Eocene (Ferrusquía-Villafranca et al, 2016) in age. A new U-Pb zircon maximum depositional age of 30.6 ± 0.77 Ma for a sandstone bed that is within the fossiliferous beds, as well as some of the associated mammals ( Cormocyon , Mammacyon , Oreodontoides , Archaeolagus , among others), indicate an Arikareean 1 North American Land Mammal Age (NALMA) (Guerrero-Arenas et al, 2020). An absolute age of 28–29 Ma for the Iniyoo Local Fauna is constrained by the First Appearance Datum of the amphicyonid Mammacyon and the Last Appearance Datums for the tayassuid Perchoerus probus and Subhyracodon (Jiménez-Hidalgo et al, 2018b).…”

“…In recent years, Gregorymys veloxikua Jiménez-Hidalgo, Guerrero-Arenas, and Smith, 2018a was described from the Santiago Yolomécatl area, in northwestern Oaxaca, southern Mexico. This species is part of the Iniyoo Local Fauna that was previously considered as late Eocene in age (Chadronian) (Jiménez-Hidalgo et al, 2015, 2018a; however, a maximum depositional U-Pb age and the recent identification of typical mammalian index taxa revealed that the age of this assemblage is early Oligocene, corresponding to the Arikareean 1 (Ar1) in the North American mammalian biochronology (Guerrero-Arenas et al, 2020).…”

“…There have been considerable recent advancements in determining the locomotion of fossil rodents (Calede et al, 2019;Gobetz & Martin, 2006;Guerrero-Arenas et al, 2020;Jiménez-Hidalgo et al, 2018;Martin & Bennett, 1977;Samuels & Van Valkenburgh, 2008. These quantitative analyses have focused on the proportions of postcranial skeletons (e.g., Calede et al, 2019;Candela & Picasso, 2008;Carrizo et al, 2014;Elissamburu & de Santis, 2011;Elissamburu & Vizcaíno, 2004;Essner, 2007;Ginot et al, 2016;Lessa and Thaeler, 1989;Samuels & Van Valkenburgh, 2008) as well as the analyses of mostly complete skulls (Bertrand et al, 2016;Calede et al, 2019;Samuels & Van Valkenburgh, 2009).…”
