“…Consistent with past research with psychosocial and other human services staff persons (Bloom, Buhrke & Scott, 1988; Dietzel, 1989; Finch & Krantz, 1991), older staff persons tended to have lower emotional exhaustion than their younger colleagues. Although causal mechanisms cannot be established from this cross-sectional, correlational research, one possible explanation for lower burnout among older workers is a self-selection or “survivor” effect in which staff persons with higher levels of emotional exhaustion leave, while staff persons who are better able to cope with work demands and stressors or who are simply less prone to develop high burnout remain.…”

“…Second, Quantitative Workload of VR Services might be due to the combination of a shortage of professionals and the increasing trend of employment of individuals with disabilities in recent years in Japan. Previous studies show that the amount of paperwork and heavy caseload management of VR services continue to be major sources of work stress (Arnold & Seekins, 1997; Bloom et al, 1988; Cranswick, 1997; Garske, 1999). While the number of employees with disabilities keeps increasing in Japan (Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, 2017), the shortage of VR professionals is becoming more apparent as these management tasks increase.…”

Burnout refers to a ‘syndrome of physical and emotional exhaustion, involving the development of negative self-concept, negative job attitudes, and loss of concern and feelings for clients’ (Pines & Maslach, 1978, p. 224).…”

In Bloom, Buhre, and Scott's (1988) investigation of burnout, the data suggests that job expectations may be a key to developing treatment and coping strategies. Longitudinal studies that measure the process by which staff shift or make The Assessment of Burnout: A Review of Three Inventories Useful for Research and Counseling adjustments in work expectations may lead to strategies for reducing or preventing burnout.…”
