Burden of traumatic spine fractures in Tehran, Iran

Abstract: BackgroundThe Disability-Adjusted Life Year (DALY) was designed by the World Health Organization (WHO) to measure, compare, and analyze the burden of various diseases. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on the assessment of burden of traumatic spinal fracture (TSF) in an Iranian community. We estimated burden of TSF includes both isolated (iTSF) and associated injuries related to traumatic spinal fractures (aTSF) in Tehran, the capital of Iran, for the year 2006-2007 using DALYs.MethodsBurde… Show more

“…Although there have been no studies that report the incidence and prevalence of SCI in Canada, initial estimates can be obtained using studies that meet these criteria in conjunction with data on Canadian demographics. Using data from other regions to calculate the burden and even incidence and prevalence of disease has proven to be acceptable [17,18]. We estimate the national discharge incidence for TSCI and NTSCI to be 3,675 cases (109 per million) and the prevalence of SCI in Canada to be 85,556 in 2010.…”

“…[ 2 3 ] The incidence of spinal fractures is reported to vary between 16 and 64/100,000 depending on the study area and population concerned. [ 4 5 ] Internationally, most of the injuries are caused by road traffic accidents (RTAs), together with low and high falls. Road traffic and high fall accidents are typical etiology in young patients, whereas the role of low falls and associated osteoporosis increases trauma in older population.…”

“…The incidence rate of TSI in Iran is 16.35 per 100 000 people. Similar to other types of traumatic injury, the incidence of traumatic spine fracture in males is more than females (1). Also, the prevalence of traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) in Iran ranges from 1.2 to 11.4 per 10 000 people (3).…”
