Burden of tension-type headache in the Middle East and North Africa region, 1990-2019

Abstract: Introduction Tension-type headache (TTH) is the most prevalent neurological disorder. As there is a gap in the literature regarding the disease burden attributable to TTH in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, the aim of the present study was to report the epidemiological indicators of TTH in MENA, from 1990 to 2019, by sex, age and socio-demographic index (SDI). Methods Publicly available data on the point prevalence, annual incidence … Show more

“…Finally, our present work was only focused on the regional and national levels of the burden of headache disorders in East and Southeast Asia, so the results and conclusions might not be fully applicable to those living on other continents. Thankfully, a research team [ 44 ] from Iran has already thoroughly analysed the burden of TTH in the Middle East and North Africa, providing us with an opportunity to learn more about the headache problem in these regions. Nevertheless, further investigations in other regions are still eagerly awaited.…”

“…Repetitive episodes of muscle pain can sensitize the central nervous system, causing TTH to progress. Therefore, muscle variables may be to blame for both the chronic nature of the disease as well as the episode of acute headache [6].Tension-type Headache, although a priori is associated with mild symptoms, can become disabling when the symptomatology is aggravated and may increase work absenteeism, decrease social commitments and in some cases, may trigger depressive states in the person suffering from it [7].Even stress and anxiety are triggering factors that are having a lot of significance in the development of TTH [8].In this sense, a recent study by Safiri et al [9], highlighting that the increase in theincidence of TTH in the Middle East and North Africa region could be related to an increase in psychiatric problems, being a 30% higher incidence of anxiety, stress and depression, compared to the world average. In another recent study, the average TTH in this region was 20.5% [2].…”

“…Acomete aproximadamente 40% da população mundial e gera grande impacto na qualidade de vida comprometendo a realização das atividades cotidianas e laborais dos indivíduos acometidos (KIM et al, 2019;BJORVATN et al, 2018). A prevalência média de CTT em adultos é de 46%, sendo um dos distúrbios neurológicos mais comuns entre jovens e adultos de meia idade, com pico de incidência na faixa etária de 40-49 anos para ambos os sexos (SAFIRI et al, 2022) 4 .…”
