“…The lack of a validated standardized assessment of eating disorders may account for the higher prevalence in the present study as a result of bias in self-report. However, despite the lack of a validated measure of eating disorders in the present study, the results support the association between eating disorders, abuse and neurotic symptoms found in other studies from Europe, the USA, New Zealand and Australia among females (Deep, Lilenfeld, Plotnicov, Pollice, & Kaye, 1999;Dohm et al, 2002;Jarvis & Copeland, 1997;Mullen, Martin, Anderson, Romans, & Herbison, 1993Schoemaker, Smit, Bijl, & Vollebergh, 2002). Loss of appetite is often related to drug use and drug users in Glasgow have been found to be underweight when compared to the general population (McCombie et al, 1995).…”

“…One of these is a history of early traumatic experiences of sexual, physical, or emotional abuse (Bushnell, Wells, & Oakley-Brown, 1992;Connors & Morse, 1993;Dansky, Brewerton, Kilpatrick, & O'Neil, 1997;Leonard, Steiger, & Kao, 2003;Murray & Waller, 2002;Pope & Hudson, 1992;Putnam & Trickett, 1997;Schoemaker, Smit, Bjil, & Vollebergh, 2002). However, a specific and direct causal relationship between the history of trauma and/or sexual or physical abuse and the subsequent development of an eating disorder has not been demonstrated.…”
