The goal of this paper is to provide guidance to researchers investigating exploratory search behaviors and exploratory search systems. It focuses on the design of search tasks assigned in such studies. Based on a review of past studies, a set of task characteristics associated with exploratory search tasks are identified: exploratory search tasks focus on learning and investigative search goals; they are general (rather than specific), open-ended, and often target multiple items/documents; they involve uncertainty and are motivated by ill-defined or ill-structured problems; they are dynamic and evolve over time; they are multi-faceted and may be procedurally complex; and they are often accompanied by other information or cognitive behaviors, such as sensemaking. Recommendations are provided for the design of search task descriptions that will elicit exploratory search behaviors.

The research described in this article is an attempt to characterize the kind of search behaviour users follow while gathering information on the Web. Information gathering on the Web is a task in which users collect information; possibly from different sources (pages); more likely over multiple sessions to satisfy certain requirements and goals. This process involves decision making and organization of the information gathered for the task. Information gathering tasks have been shown to be search-reliant. Therefore, identifying the kind of search behaviour users choose for this kind of task may lead to supporting Web information gathering tools as recommended in the findings of this research. The results of the user study reported in this paper indicate that the user search behaviour during Web information gathering tasks has characteristics of both orienteering and teleporting behaviours.

Abstract. Modern organizations face the challenge of having to manage an increasing amount of information. The resulting information overload leads more and more to problems in decision making with potentially negative economic consequences. Decision-makers and knowledge intensive workers are especially affected. To address this problem, information demand patterns were proposed which capture organizational knowledge about the information demand of single roles. This work extends the concept of information demand patterns from single roles to teams. Using the knowledge intensive field of project management, the paper shows how to apply the concept of information demand patterns for a whole team. The contributions of this work are (1) the methodical approach to develop information demand patterns for teams, (2) an actual information demand pattern for a steering committee in the context of project management, (3) reflections on the differences between role patterns and team patterns.
