Bti-based insecticide enhances the predatory abilities of the backswimmer Buenoa tarsalis (Hemiptera: Notonectidae)

Abstract: The backswimmer Buenoa tarsalis (Hemiptera: Notonectidae) is a naturally occurring predator of immature stages of mosquitoes. These aquatic predators can suffer from non-targeted exposure to insecticides that are commonly used in aquatic environments to control mosquitoes. Here, we evaluated whether insecticide formulations containing the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bt) or the organophosphate pirimiphos-methyl would affect the survival and the predatory abilities of B. tarsalis. First, w… Show more

Curiously, recent studies indicate that aquatic predators exposed to sublethal doses of Bacillus thuringiensis var israelensis (Bt i ) are more successful predators after exposure …”

“…Hereby, we integrated two recommended strategies against the build-up of resistance in vector populations (Liu, 2015;Raymond et al, 2001). Our results suggest that the application of a taxon-specific biopesticide, which targets the vector species while not affecting the predator, is promising to target the resistant strain (Gutiérrez et al, 2017a;McNitt et al, 1995). Indeed, Bti caused a ca.…”

“…This will also influence how pesticides shape the outcome of the interactions between the pest species and their predators (Tran et al, 2016). Thus, pesticides that control pest populations, but that also have a low impact on their predators are required (Gutiérrez et al, 2017a). Also here, the use of taxon-specific biopesticides that target the pest species but do not affect the predator may be promising (Gutiérrez et al, 2017a;McNitt et al, 1995).…”

“…trophic interactions and competition (McCauley et al, 2011;Adamo et al, 2013;Gutiérrez et al, 2020a) and chemical stressors (e.g. heavy metals and pesticides (Tchounwou et al, 2012;Bohnenblust et al, 2013;Gutiérrez et al, 2016;Gutiérrez et al, 2017a;Gutiérrez et al, 2017b;Gutiérrez et al, 2020b;Bernhardt et al, 2017). Moreover, these evidently bear the potential to affect all living organisms, from bacteria to vertebrates, and their associated ecosystem functions and processes.…”
