In recent years, the web browser has taken over many roles of the traditional operating system, such as acting as a host platform for web applications. Web browser storage, where the web applications can save data locally was one of the new functionalities added in HTML5. However, web functionality has increased significantly since HTML5 was introduced. As web functionality increased, so did the threats facing web users. One of the most prevalent threats was the user's privacy violations. This study examines the existing security issues related to the usage of web browser storage and proposes a new model to secure the data saved in the browser's storage. The model was designed and implemented as a web browser extension to secure the saved data. The model was experimentally demonstrated and the result was evaluated.

Perpetrators leverage the untraceable feature to conduct illegal behaviors leading security issues with respect to mixing coins. Generally, bad coins are blocked based on a common blacklist. However, the blacklist may not be updated in time, which results in that bad coins escape the blocking. Consequently, perpetrators can still conduct illicit behaviors such as money laundering. In this paper, we apply game theory under imperfect information to study how coins' quality restrain these illicit behaviors under the incomplete scenario. More specifically, we propose a strategy for participants to submit deposits if they hope to mix coins with others even if they are not in blacklist at this time. The deposits will not be refunded when participants are included in the blacklist after mixing. Therefore, no participants have incentives to mix with bad coins. At the last part of this paper, we also simulate the incomes for participants, which indicates that deposits strategy is effective to prevent illicit behaviors.

Abstract. Browsers enable the user to surf over the Internet and access web sites that may include social media, email service, etc. However, such an activity incorporates various web threats (e.g. tracking, malicious content, etc.) that may imperil the user's data and any sensitive information involved. Therefore, web browsers offer pre-installed security controls to protect users from these threats. Third-party browser software (i.e. add-ons) is also available that enhances these pre-installed security controls, or substitutes them. In this paper, we examine the available security controls that exist in modern browsers to reveal any gaps in the offered security protection. We also study the available security and privacy add-ons and observe whether the above mentioned gaps (i.e. when a security control is unavailable) are covered or need to be revisited.
